=The S.C.A. Tent Services.= The Soldiers' Christian Association had their tent splendidly fitted up, as all their tents are. But it was most unfortunate. Twice was it blown down by fierce sandstorms, and on the second occasion the tent-pole was broken beyond repair. A tree was, however not commandeered, but bought.
"I don't think I would have missed the circus." He had a thrilling hope that she meant the tent-pole; she looked as if she meant that, but he dared not let himself believe it. "No," he continued; "I have been so madly happy in being with you that I've fairly worn out your patience. I've haunted you all day, and I have " "All that has nothing to do with it," she said, slowly.
Tom Hammond was set to dig a hole of eighteen inches smaller diameter than the circle of the tent. It was three feet in depth, with perpendicular sides. At nine inches from the edge a trench a foot deep was dug. In the centre was an old flour barrel filled with earth. Upon this stood the tent-pole.
Here was the ring; here the tent-pole holes, and here a scrap of paper torn from a hoop the bareback rider leaped through.... Oh, now I know what I was going to tell you that the clown said. The comicalest thing! He picked up one of these hoops and began to sniffle. So the ring-master asked him what he was crying about. "I I was thinking of my mother. Smf! My good old mother!"
The Persian breathed: "With our Bwana's own pistol. As if he had killed himself. I peeped through the curtain. The pistol was hanging from the tent-pole. When he looked at it, and then at our Bwana, I read everything in his mind. But if this also is the will of God it will not happen until some hour when the camp is still when we are all asleep."
She put her hand to her cheek and turned away from him a little tremulously. Both were silent. They had been together since early morning. Plattville was proud of him. Old Tom Martin, still perched alone On his high seat, saw them standing by the tent-pole, and watched them from under his rusty hat brim.
The black tents are folded up and placed on the backs of mules; and a large kettle is slung upon the end of the tent-pole. The men and women drive the herds and flocks, while the children and the chickens ride upon the cows. The Kurds have thin, dark faces, hooked noses, and black eyes, with a fierce and malicious look.
The higher we rose, the more intense became the excitement. The slope eased off, at length we could be detached, and Croz and I, dashed away, ran a neck-and-neck race, which ended in a dead heat. At 1:40 P.M., the world was at our feet, and the Matterhorn was conquered! The others arrived. Croz now took the tent-pole, and planted it in the highest snow.
At heart they were all good, kindly men and yet how often we suffered from their lack of something more than mere goodness! We were twelve in a tent and going to bed always tried our tempers severely. Some of us would come in with muddy boots and tread on the blankets of the others. Those who went to bed early could stretch out their legs until their feet touched the tent-pole.
"I am very sleepy, dear friends," he said, with a courteous, apologetic gesture, and closed his eyes. Presently they opened again. "My snuff-box in my pocket," he said to the old woman, waving a hand to where his uniform hung from the tent-pole; "it is for you, madame."
