Lincoln Steffens reflects the views of many, however, when he denies that the financial magnates are as yet guided by this "enlightened selfishness," and says that they are only just becoming "class-conscious," and it is true that they have not yet worked out any elaborate policy of social reform or government ownership.

Hauch not infrequently seeks his poetic themes in Germany, as do Nodier and Gerard de Nerval. Oehlenschlaeger's tragedies correspond to the dramas of Victor Hugo.
Since the decline of the doctrines of nature held by Schelling, Steffens, and Hegel, there has come to our knowledge, from the domain of philosophy, but one earnest attempt to explain the origin and development of organisms down to the concrete differences between single types, classes, and even orders and families, from one single metaphysical principle; and this attempt has been made by an antagonist of the descent doctrine.
It is an accretion of power around a center of influence, cemented by patronage, graft, favors, friendship, loyalties, habits, a human grouping, a natural pyramid. Only recently have we begun to see that the "political ring" is not something confined to public life. It was Lincoln Steffens, I believe, who first perceived that fact.
