The boat belonged to James Spink, the Bell Rock pilot, who chanced to have come off express from Arbroath that day with letters.

It was plainly to be seen that the shifting of the boat had filled Ham Spink with rage, and he was unusually anxious to "square up" with the four boy hunters. But he could do nothing, and at last he and his crony withdrew. "I am glad you arrived," said Giant. "If you hadn't I am afraid those fellows would have gotten the best of us."

As it moved along in the grass it looked somewhat like a large black cat. Excited, Ham Spink ran close, took hasty aim and let fire. The skunk was hit but not badly wounded. It swished around, and an instant later the dudish young hunter received a stream of liquid over his cheek and shoulder that almost paralyzed him. "Oh! oh! Take it away!" screamed poor Ham. "Oh, dear me!"

"I've got an idea," he went on, as he caught sight of a tiny island about a hundred feet from shore. "Why not tie their boat fast over there? Then if they want it they can swim for it." "Good!" cried Snap, and grinned. Taking their own boat along, they rowed to the island, and there the Spink craft was made fast on the side next to the main shore and in plain view of anybody who might be passing.

It seems to me that a man who thinks he can make two thousand a year is very foolish to let himself out at two guineas an evening." "Do you know, Miss Linderham, that was just what I thought myself, and I told the respectable Spink so, too. I told him I had had an offer of two thousand a year in his own line of business. He said that no firm in London could afford the money.

In due time the physician, who was also a surgeon, came. He probed for the ball, and succeeded in extracting it. He gave those restoratives and remedies which the state of medicine in those days and in that region warranted. Spink should enter the room. For days and weeks the life of the lovely girl hung in an even balance.

"Ay, sure enough," said Spink dryly; "but ye needna be sae glad aboot it, for Swankie was aye good to you." "Ay, Davy," cried Janet, putting her arm round her husband's neck, and kissing him, "but he wasna good to you. He led ye into evil ways mony a time when ye would rather hae keepit oot o' them. Na, na, Davy, ye needna shake yer heed; I ken'd fine."

"Take good care of things while we are gone," cautioned the doctor's son. "Don't let the Spink crowd get the best of you." "We'll watch out," answered Whopper. "If they try any funny business we'll shoot them into the middle of next year!" "Oh, don't shoot anybody!" cried Snap. "Well, you know what I mean," answered the youth who loved to exaggerate.

Upon this fortunate change of circumstances, sixteen of the artificers were sent, at two trips, in one of the boats, with instructions for Spink to proceed with them to the floating light. This being accomplished, the remaining sixteen followed in the two boats belonging to the service of the rock.

Spink, although a smuggler, and by no means a particularly respectable man, had not yet sunk so low in the scale of life as to be willing to commit burglary. Swankie and the Badger suspected this, and, although they required his assistance much, they were afraid to ask him to join, lest he should not only refuse, but turn against them.
