Vietnam or Thailand ? Vote for the TOP Country of the Week !

The scattered and ineffective "pork-barrel" appropriations of Congress are dictated not by intelligent consideration for the public weal, but by the desire to throw a sop to this and that section of the country, and thereby win votes.

For the eyes of the clergyman were fixed upon me from his corner, as if he were trying to put off his curiosity with the sop of a probable conjecture about me. "I fear he would think me a heathen," I said to myself. "But if ever there was humanity in a countenance, there it is." It grew more and more pleasant to think of the bright fire and the cheerful room that awaited me.

The modern nervous intensity, missing absolutely in Hals and his substantial humans, is present in Rembrandt. We say "modern" as a sop to our vanity, but we are the "ancients," and there is no mode of thought, no mood that has not been experienced and expressed by our ancestors.

As there was no time to be lost, James went out and brought in Larry's horse, to which he gave a sop of damper and spirits and water, while Larry was refreshing himself. "It's good luck I'll have on a good errand, I hope," he exclaimed, as he leaped into the saddle; "for though the police and I weren't over friendly once on a time, I can now face them like an honest man, thanks to yer honour."

Now the first thing to remark about the law is that it was by no means a demagogue's sop tossed to the city mob which he was courting. This consideration alone destroys at once the absurd imputation of his being actuated merely by demagogic motives; but in no history is it adequately enforced. No demagogue at that epoch would have spread his nets so wide.

That was one sop to conscience when I remembered that she was a wife. Friend Jenks must have read my thoughts, inasmuch as during the course of the afternoon he had uttered abruptly: "These Mormons don't exactly recognize Gentile marriages. Did you know that?" He flung me a look from beneath shaggy brows. "What?" I exclaimed. "How so?"

When Russia leased the Liaotung Peninsula from China, after having prevented Japan from retaining it, she threw Korea as a sop to Japan.

"I've done with it now," muttered Fred. "I don't see any fun in going sop, sop, squeeze, squatter, through all this cold, dark water. Eh! what's that the end of it?" "I think so," said Scarlett, holding the lanthorn up as high as he could. "Here are some steps and a door." "Of course; then that must be the door that opens on the lake." "No, it can't be, for the steps are dry, and I say, Fred!"

Alas, it is to be feared not; for it is no difficult thing to delude ourselves in the matter of prayer. It is easy, when we have sinned, and before the next strong temptation to the same sin presents itself, to pray against repeating it, and so to give a sop to our conscience, without having either the heart's desire or the honest resolve to abstain from that sin.

"It is wine in the cup and meat well seasoned that doth delight the heart of man." "The perfume of flowers doth breathe of giving. So do they breathe of love which doth ever give, until a woman giveth herself to be loved of a man as thou art promised to Joel. How strange and holy a thing is love!" But get thou the sop bowls. Joel and Lazarus are coming." "Ha! ha! ha!"
