And with such a creed he felt that the humanity of the Renascence, the philosophy of the thinker, the comprehension of the statesman, were alike at war. A policy of comprehension seemed to him simply a policy of faithlessness to God. Ceremonies which in an hour of triumph he might have regarded as solaces to weak brethren, he looked on as acts of treason in this hour of defeat.
But he that hath found charity to be the temper of happiness, which doth put the soul in a natural and easy condition, and openeth it to the solaces of that pure and sublime entertainment which the angels do spread for such as obey the will of their Creator, hath discovered a more subtle alchemy than any of which the philosophers did dream, for he transmuteth the enjoyments of others into his own, and his large and open heart partaketh of the satisfaction of all around him.
And then if she solaces herself with a lover as she must, or die she is continually agitated with fears of her husband's jealousy, and the dread of discovery. Like the thirsty traveller in a barren waste, her soul yearns for an ocean of delights and pants and longs in vain.

It tells everything. The sincerity of foulness pleases us, and rests the soul. When one has passed one's time in enduring upon earth the spectacle of the great airs which reasons of state, the oath, political sagacity, human justice, professional probity, the austerities of situation, incorruptible robes all assume, it solaces one to enter a sewer and to behold the mire which befits it.
'You have the remedy in your own hands. But I suppose you get a good deal of pleasure out of the consciousness of your own superiority to us all, and that solaces and supports you through everything. 'You know that is not so! I said, and my tone was indignant. He laughed. 'You mustn't get angry, you know; that is not saintly. Are you frightened of our respected aunt?
"But it is a good thing to love the classics and devotion," he went on presently with a sententious air, "they are solaces in time of trouble. I have found that myself." He glanced up at the other and down again. "I was caught saying our Lady matins one day," he said, "when the Cardinal was in trouble. I remember I was very devout that morning."
These reflections did but wait upon the impulse which still further identified him to himself the impulse to go and keep going and he cast about for solaces. "It is the Judgment," he said, with a grim smile; "but my stores remain, and Hiram of Tyre is yet my friend. I have my experience of more than a thousand years, and with it youth again. I cannot make men better, and God refuses my services.
He solaces his imagination, too, by thinking of the many Chancellors and Vices, and Masters of the Rolls who are deceased; and he gets such a flavour of the country out of telling the two 'prentices how he HAS heard say that a brook "as clear as crystial" once ran right down the middle of Holborn, when Turnstile really was a turnstile, leading slap away into the meadows gets such a flavour of the country out of this that he never wants to go there.
There were even marvelous moments when, from the depths of my newly informed heart, I pitied them poor creatures, who, withheld from the infinite solaces that I had come to know, were still utterly within that Shell of sense So frail, so piteously contrived for pain. Within it, yes; yet exercising qualities that so sublimely transcended it.
