To this also Paul points in the phrase, 'the flesh of sin. The example of which we have been speaking is much, but it is weak for the very same reason for which law is weak that it operates only through our nature as it is; and that is not enough. Sin's hold on man is twofold one that it has perverted his relation to God, and another that it has corrupted his nature.
But now we see the marks of joy and sorrow, what room for constancy then is here? Knowing that birth brings this deliverance then I put away all thought of sin's defilement; the whole world, everything, endures! what then becomes of this idea of rescue?
Sin's secondary position is indicated by making him a son of Bel. And yet as a matter of fact it is only a red cord that is between us and death namely, the blood of the Son of God; for, as in the Old Testament times when God saw the blood and the destroying angel passed over the home, so in these New Testament times the blood which has been received by faith insures us our safety and we are set free from sin's penalty and sin's power.
Sin at its ugliest would stretch out its long, bony arms and gaunt hands, and fold Him to itself in closest embrace and hold Him there. And He was allowing this, that so when sin's worst was done, He might seize it by the throat and strangle it. He would put death to death. Yet so terrific is the struggle that He must accept in Himself that which He thereby destroys.
