"If this is true, Snap, the best thing we can do is to go over to the Felps camp and watch out for this Lusher Barrock," said Shep. "And that is what I am going to do," answered Snap. "When will you go?" questioned Whopper. "As soon as possible." "We can't get to the camp very well from here. We'll have to go back to Firefly Lake first." "Do you suppose this Barrock went that way?"
He moved away, startled and injured, looking at his playfellow with reproachful eyes. But Betsy was relentless. Aunt Frances must not be frightened! "Here, Shep! Here, Shep!" she called loudly, and when the big dog came bounding to her she pointed to the calf and said sternly, "Take him into the barn! Drive him into the barn, sir!"
His brown-buff coat, of just the right shade, seemed slightly veiled with black; his full out-arching front was pure white. "Shep," said Janet. His fine eyebrow rose as he gave her a look a very short one, however. When she addressed him again she could see his interest rising a degree; finally he came and sat down beside her. Encouraged by this show of friendship, Janet put her hand on him.
"Now, then, to take our things and go into camp for the night," said the doctor's son. "We'll have to find some shelter under the rocks, not having a tent." The boys knew the locality fairly well, from their previous visits, and walked to where there was a split in the hills. Here was located a rocky cliff, hollowed out somewhat at the bottom. "We can camp here," said Shep.
"I suppose he did that so that he could get away. He knew the men around here would try to save the property instead of going after him." "Exactly, Charley. He must have been a cold-blooded villain to do such a thing, for it might have been the means of burning down everything," continued Mr. Dodge. "What was he doing at the desk, Mr. Dodge?" asked Shep.
In the shack they found a rude bench and a table, and these they transferred to the cabin. When they tried their new fireplace they found it worked well, the smoke going up the rude chimney without difficulty. "Now, this is something like!" declared Giant, as he surveyed the work. "Even in a storm we can be quite comfortable here." "Providing the roof doesn't leak," declared Shep.
They had their traps stored in that boathouse." "Did those boys come to a camp up here?" asked the tramp, with interest. "Yes." "What were their names?" "Snap Dodge, Shep Reed, a fellow called Whopper Dawson and a little chap named Caslette." "Humph! the very same crowd," muttered Kiddy Leech. "So you played the trick on them, eh? I am glad of it."
But with Bill it's different.... Do you remember our old Shep?" "No," I returned wonderingly, almost impatiently. "What about him?" "Well," he mused, "I've been picking up knowledge of men for a while along back; and I've come to prize more highly the personal history of dogs; and Shep was worth a biography for its own sake, to say nothing of the value of a typical case.
"Wonder if he'll come back to-night?" was Giant's question. "Perhaps, unless he was fatally wounded," answered Shep. They made a thorough search for the missing watch, camera, and other things, but without success. Shep would not touch the shirt, and left it where it was. But he took the gun, and after examining it proceeded to load up the empty barrel.
The boys lost no time in dressing. As it was warm, Shep did not miss his shirt very much, nor did Giant miss his sock. Having no belt, Snap used a piece of stout cord instead. "The loss of the gun is bad," said the doctor's son as they were finishing their toilet. "For if that crazy fellow has it, it will be so much harder to tackle him." "That's true," answered Snap.
