We learn more about the offering from Numbers xxix. 12 et seq., which appoints a very peculiar arrangement.
"The Gallic oxen especially are of good repute in Italy, for field labour forsooth; whereas the Ligurian are good for nothing." Here, no doubt, Cisalpine Gaul is referred to, but the cattle-husbandry there doubtless goes back to the Celtic epoch. Mus. Comp. Movers, Phoen. ii. 3, 167 seq. IV. V. Josaphat is given, with authorities, etc. in my "History of the Warfare of Science with Theology," Vol. II, pp. 381 et seq. We have had the courage, though late, to apply this principle to South Africa and Ireland. There remains our greatest act of courage and wisdom to apply it to India. G. Lowes Dickinson, "The War and the Way Out," pp. 34 et seq.
Even after the next step was taken, and the husband came to live with his wife, his position was that of a visitor in her home, where she would have the protection of her own kindred. She would still be the owner of her children, who would bear her name, and not the father’s; and the inheritance of all property would still be in the female line.
