Until then Dundee had let his chief express his pent-up convictions without interruption, and indeed Sanderson's courtroom training had fitted him admirably for long speeches. But he could keep silent no longer. "That is what has been worrying me, chief," he interrupted.

Sanderson, though, despite his conviction, felt a pulse of sympathy for the first rider. It was that emotion which impelled him to keep going cautiously forward when, by all the rules of life in that country, he should have stood at a distance to allow the men to fight it out among themselves. Sanderson's interest grew as the fight progressed.

For Williams told him that he had "gone the limit," which meant that every cent to Sanderson's credit in the Lazette bank had been pledged to pay for the material the engineer had ordered. "We're going to rush things from now on," Williams told Sanderson. "Next week we'll need ten thousand dollars, at least." Sanderson went into the house and had a long talk with Mary Bransford.

The girls wasted no time in words, and led him swiftly up the stairs, pausing before Mrs. Sanderson's door. "What shall we do if she's gone?" whispered Betty, a sudden panic seizing her. Then, without further delay, rapped smartly on the door. At the answering "come in" they tumbled into the room, followed by Sergeant Mullins. Then it was the second miracle happened! Mrs.

The next afternoon, after having washed and dried our clothes and took a good bath in the stream near by, we were started under guard for FRANKLIN. We walked about three miles, when we stopped at the house of a Union man named Johnson, and whose son had joined Captain Sanderson's company of home guards to save conscription, and who was detailed as one of our guard.

I organized a small silent beat of a section of the forest, but nothing came of it. My head man then resolved to prepare a watching place in a tree near the carcase, and this time I resolved to follow Mr. Sanderson's advice, and begin to watch quite early in the afternoon.

And during the remaining days of Sanderson's absence she succeeded in convincing herself that Sanderson's attitude toward her was the usual attitude of brothers toward sisters, and that she had nothing of which to complain. On the seventh day Sanderson and Owen returned. Mary saw them ride in and she ran to the door and waved a hand to them.

"I didn't say," grinned the little man. "There's places that are hotter than an oven. And if a man has never been a wolf with women, it might be expected that he'd feel sort of warm to be kissed and fussed over by a sister he's not seen for a good many years. He'd seem like a stranger to her almost." Sanderson's eyes glowed with a new interest in the little man.

And then, because of the sick-calf look on Bill Sanderson's face as he stared at Eve, I added him, though I'd always liked the guy. Eve, surprisingly, had as many guys after her as Jenny; but she didn't seem interested. Or maybe she did she'd pulled her hair back and put on a dress that made her figure look good.

But the reader need not regret my want of experience here, as it would be difficult for any one to add to the admirable and exhaustive account of elephants and their ways which is to be found in the late Mr. Sanderson's admirable work.
