A machine, invented by Dr Lynn, for making salt water fresh, was tried on board the Resolution at Deptford with great success, in consequence of which the Admiralty directed all ships of war to be fitted with a still and the necessary apparatus.

We landed and traced it for a mile in an east direction, until we proved it to be the mouth of the Greenough; the water was entirely salt, and the banks, in some places seventy feet high, were composed of limestone.

For three days during the westward march in Maryland no rations were issued, and our only food was ears of green corn roasted or boiled without salt.

This was known as the "Great Salt Lake Mail," and the first contract for transporting it was let July 1, 1850, to Samuel H. Woodson of Independence, Missouri. By terms of this agreement, Woodson was to haul the mail monthly from Independence on the Missouri River to Salt Lake City, twelve hundred miles, and return.

Ragusa made woollen and silk stuffs after the looms for silk were brought from Tuscany in 1539, and shoes and glass, coral wares and wax, besides salt and other things were produced and sent into the interior by caravans. Ships went to India and America, France, Spain, England, and Holland.

"Indeed, it really is excellent; but it wants a little salt. Have you any salt, Juno?" "Got a little, ma'am. Very little left," replied Juno. "What shall we do when all our salt is gone?" said Mrs Seagrave. "Juno must get some more," replied Ready. "How I get salt? hab none left," replied Juno, looking at Ready. "There's plenty out there, Juno," said Mr Seagrave, pointing to the sea.

"For I have an idea that you cannot combine them any better than Burns did. Ah, I see, in my mind's eye, what sort of an individual you are to be, two or three years hence. Your physical man will be transmuted into salt beef and fried pork, at the rate, I should imagine, of a pound and a half a day; that being about the average which we find necessary in the kitchen.

When the meat easily separates from the bone it is done. Drain well and serve on a very clean white napkin, neatly folded and placed on the platter; decorate the napkin around the fish with sprigs of curled parsley, or with fanciful beet cuttings, or alternately with both. Split and wash the shad and afterwards dry it in a cloth. Season it with salt and pepper.

But there wasn't much game. Too many people on the trail." "Did you kill any bear?" "No. Didn't even see one. We were in too big a hurry to stop to hunt much, anyway, and when we needed meat the worst, we couldn't find it. That was on the desert between Salt Lake and these mountains. Where are we going now? Do you know?" "Over to a camp called Rough and Ready, in Grass Valley, I guess."

"That's my work the thing I'm made to do. I couldn't earn my salt selling apartment houses." "Oh, no, no," the girl hurriedly agreed. A long, long silence followed, a silence in which he was entirely oblivious to her imaginings.
