The din of voices, ringing of bells, whistle of engines, and all the varied notes of that Babel diapason that so utterly bewilders the stranger stranded on the bustling streets of busy Gotham, fell upon Regina's ears with the startling force of novelty.
Since the memorable day of Regina's visit to Central Park many weeks had elapsed, and one wild stormy evening in March she sat at the library table writing her translation of a portion of "Egmont."
He had anticipated some complaint of his absence on the previous day, and some severe allusion to his appearance in the capacity of a Socialist lecturer. Regina's indulgence, or Regina's interest in circumstances of more pressing importance, preserved a merciful silence on both subjects.
He was especially perplexed and angry, when he reflected on the unassailably strong influence which her uncle appeared to have over her. All Regina's sympathy was with Mr. Farnaby and his troubles. Amelius might have understood her a little better, if she had told him what had passed between her uncle and herself on the night of Mr. Farnaby's return, in a state of indignation, from the lecture.
"I merely possess her assurance that she was married by you." "Have you been informed who is Regina's father?" "The name has always been carefully suppressed, but she told me that Orme was merely an alias." "Have you ever suspected the truth?" "Really, that is a question I cannot answer. I have at times conjectured, but only in a random unauthorized way.
Ercole's hand relaxed, and the knife fell gleaming at his feet. One instant more and he turned and fled through the trees, towards San Gregorio, his dog galloping heavily after him. Regina's hands fell by her sides, and the folds of her cloak closed together and hung straight down.
"I know he would, because when he raved in his fever he used to call for you." Aurora started and fixed her eyes on Regina's. "Yes," Regina said, answering the look. "He often called you by name. He loved you once." She pronounced the words with an accent of pity, drawing herself up to her full height; and there was triumph in the light of her eyes.
Marcello made half a step backwards in his surprise. "Yes. I have told you what he did." She turned to Ercole. "What do you want of me? Is it money that you want, perhaps?" Ercole stiffened himself and seemed to grow taller. His black eyes flashed dangerously, and his heavy eyebrows were suddenly stern and level, as Regina's were. "You are your mother's daughter," he said slowly.
Anyhow, I've done it with Farnaby, and it can't be undone. There will be no peace for me now, till I have spoken to Regina. I have read the note you left for me. Did you see her, when you called at the house?" The quiet tone in which the question was put surprised Rufus. He had fully expected, after Regina's reception of him, to be called to account for the liberty that he had taken.
Tears were stealing down Regina's cheeks, as she watched the anguish she felt powerless to relieve, and she began to realize the depth of woe that had blackened all her past. "He promised to love, honour, cherish me, as long as life lasted, and Mr. Hargrove pronounced me his wife, and blessed me. How dared we expect a blessing!
