The confession of these last few lines refutes the whole of Mr. Mill's elaborate argument on the worthlessness and immorality of that religion which from his grave he lifts his sad and hollow voice to overthrow. Not only we, the latest seed of Time ... not only we that prate Of rights and wrongs, have loved the women well.

Up. Pu. An objection is raised. 'As long as Prana dwells in this body, so long there is life'; 'Prana alone is the conscious Self, and having laid hold of this body, it makes it rise up. These passages again mention characteristic attributes of the chief vital air. Hence there is here no 'multitude of attributes belonging to the Self. The latter part of the Sutra refutes this objection.

Accordingly, these sources must be stated in the brief as well as in the expanded argument. Thus the rule: Rule XII. After all evidence state in parentheses the source from which it came. In addition to establishing the side of the proposition which it advocates, a good brief almost invariably refutes the main arguments of the opposite side.

The next Sutra refers to the reasons set forth for his view by the Purvapakshin and refutes them. Where the cognising person is one only, repetition of the same matter under a new heading can only be explained as meaning difference of object enjoined, and hence separation of the two vidyas. The next Sutra refutes the argument founded on a rite enjoined in the Mundaka.

With a confidence rather unusual, you challenge me to account for Jesus' not being known by the two disciples while he walked with them on their way to Emmaus; you bring a comparison, and urge the subject in a way to signify that you have found something in the scripture account that "refutes itself." You might have considered Mary's case too as a similar one.

This, a French historian claims, refutes "the deplorable prejudices, born of our misfortunes, that France is not fitted for sea commerce, the only commerce that indefinitely extends the power of a nation with its sphere of activity." This free and happy movement of the people was far from acceptable to Fleuri, who seems to have seen it with the distrust of a hen that has hatched ducklings.

But the legal provision made a few years before, viz. that it should not be lawful for the tribunes to choose a colleague, refutes beyond every thing else the false inscription on the statue.

He refutes those who advanced that Grotius employed his fine Latin to send Oxenstiern the lies of the day; and maintains that such as say this, have either never read Grotius's letters, or are unacquainted with the history of Lewis XIII. He does not deny, that, among the many pieces of news contained in them, there are some without foundation; but he excuses him, because a Minister is obliged to write what is generally reported.

The well-known fable for the most part refutes itself. But even its apparently historical ingredients are found on closer examination to have been invented. But these supplementary consuls in the earlier period only occurred when merely one of the consuls had dropped out: pairs of supplementary consuls are not found until the later ages of the republic.

Even if learned men and libraries did not possess maps of the Louvre made in the time of Charles IX., on which its then position is clearly indicated, the building itself refutes the error. All the kings who co-operated in the work of erecting this enormous mass of buildings never failed to put their initials or some special monogram on the parts they had severally built.
