There is extant a fragment of a comedy, entitled 'The Cities, written by the Rhodian poet Anaxandrides, in which the Egyptian worship of animals is amusingly enough quizzed. A translation will be found in Dr Prichard's Analysis of Egyptian Mythology. The lines referring to cat-worship are as follow:

Thinking he had now found it in a rich form, he turned partly round, and would undoubtedly have quizzed Mrs. Nichols unmercifully, had not something in the appearance of 'Lena prevented him.

At the quiet sneer a lightning-flash showed John that Allardyce had quizzed him too. For a moment he was conscious of a vast self-pity. "Damn them, they're all down on me," he thought. Then a vindictive rage against them all took hold of him, tense, quivering. "Did you see Thomas Brodie when ye were out?" came the suave inquiry. "I saw him," said John, raising fierce eyes to his father's.

And all five looked round. She could feel her face burning. Charlie quizzed her with a word, and then turned to Edwin Clayhanger for support. "Don't you think that some of it's dullish, Teddy?" Edwin Clayhanger, shamefaced, looked at Hilda wistfully, as if in apology, as if appealing to her clemency against her fierceness; and said slowly: "Well yes."

Furlong, after racking his invention about the souvenir to his "dear Gussy," at length fixed on a fan, as the most suitable gift; for Gussy had been quizzed at home about "blushing," and all that sort of thing, and the puerile perceptions of the attache saw something very smart in sending her wherewith "to hide her blushes."

Urgent austere letters came from the father, and fond heart- rending appeals from the mother. Charley's heart was rent. It was, at any rate, a sign in him that he was not past hope of grace, that he never laughed at these monitions, that he never showed such letters to his companions, never quizzed his 'governor's' lectures, or made merry over the grief of his mother.

So they continued on down the stream for some distance. "Now, all together. Go under water all at the same time," ordered Dick. Below the surface of the river they went. One after another their heads presently appeared above the surface once more. "Have you fellows lost anything?" quizzed Reade, suddenly appearing on the bank.

Though the men quizzed her, asking if she were glad to get to her mistress again, whether she had known all this time the lady's whereabouts, she answered no single word, but busied herself seeing the horse loaded to her notion. Presently, in the guidance of Pierre, Monsieur appeared. "You stay, Félix, and go to the Bastille for your master. Then you will wait at the St.

"And who is Daly?" said I, inquiringly, for I was rather interested in hearing what peculiar qualification as a diner-out the counsellor might lay claim to, many of Tom's friends being as remarkable for being the quizzed as the quizzers.

"Oh! it's you," she cried. "I knew you wouldn't be very long away. Been having another try to see whether you're a man or a fish? Guess the fish will win out if you're not careful." She became solemn suddenly. "Say! you go in there and get dressed. I just got to talk to you about something." "Gracious goodness! Is it as serious as all that, Miss Clark?" I quizzed. "Serious enough.
