I start in about three days with seven, thousand men to Meridian via Pontotoc. Demonstrate on Decatur, to hold Roddy. W. SOOY SMITH, Brigadier-General, Chief of Cavalry, Military Division of the Mississippi. MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, July 9,1875 General W. T. SHERMAN, Commander-in-Chief, United States Army. SIR: Your letter of July 7th is just received.
"Mine," said Box Izard, "is a regulation pen-knife, contributed by the United States, with the regret, Beau, that I can't 'commodate you with a pine coffin for you to git into and git away down lower than you ever been." "Yaw's a dollar," said Pontotoc Bibb; "it'll do for me an' Lowndes Cleburn, who's a poet and genius, and never has no money. This buys me off, Beau, for a month."
In anticipation of this very danger, I had sent General Sturgis to Memphis to take command of all the cavalry in that quarter, to go out toward Pontotoc, engage Forrest and defeat him; but on the 14th of June I learned that General Sturgis had himself been defeated on the 10th of June, and had been driven by Forrest back into Memphis in considerable confusion.
The bidding commenced, and I remember well when the auctioneer said; "Three hundred eighty dollars once, twice and sold to Mr. Edward McGee." He was a rich cotton planter of Pontotoc, Miss. As near as I can recollect, I was not more than twelve years of age, so did not sell for very much. Servant women sold for $500 to $700, and sometimes as high as $800 when possessing extra qualifications.
McGee, or "Boss," as I soon learned to call him, bought sixty other slaves before he bought me, and they were started in a herd for Atlanta, Ga., on foot. Boss, myself and ten others met them there. We then started for Pontotoc, Miss. On our way we stopped at Edenton, Ga., where Boss sold twenty-one of the sixty slaves. We then proceeded on our way, Boss by rail and we on foot, or in the wagon.
This last addressed to some other members of the committee, who had meantime entered. "Infum boy will make a spry page," said the Hon. Box Izard, of Arkansaw. "Harder to get infum page than the Speaker's eye," said the orator, Pontotoc Bibb, of Georgia.
"I'll make it a V for Beau," said Pontotoc Bibb, "if he gives him a rub on the raw like that another lick. Durn a mean man, Cleburn!" "Come down, Northerner," pressed the incorrigible loafer again; "it don't become a Right Honorable to be so mean with old Beau."
Our friends in Pontotoc, Tippah, De Soto and Pauola took grounds which fell far short of that idea, though their resolutions were very firm in regard to Disunion and an ultimate result. "In the meantime the Disunion sentiment among the people is growing every day more intense. "Upon the whole, you have great cause for gratification in the action of your State.
Infirm boy wants to be a page, on the recommendation of a Whig, to a Dimmycratic committee. I say, gen'lemen, what do you think of that, heigh?" This last addressed to some other members of the committee, who had meantime entered. "Infum boy will make a spry page," said the Hon. Box Izard, of Arkansaw. "Harder to get infum page than the Speaker's eye," said the orator, Pontotoc Bibb, of Georgia.
We were afraid to ask them the reason for their yelling, as that would have been regarded as an impertinence, and probably would have caused us all to be whipped. At length, after a long and wearisome journey, we reached Pontotoc, McGee's home, on Christmas eve.
