Mules were brought, prepared for a long journey among the Cordilleras; the two men mounted them, wrapped in their ponchos; large gaiters were attached by thongs above their knees; immense stirrups, armed with long spurs, surrounded their feet, and broad-brimmed Guayaquil hats sheltered their heads.
Mid-winter was now upon us, and the weather in this mountain region of East Tennessee was very cold, snow often falling to the depth of several inches. The thin and scanty clothing of the men afforded little protection, and while in bivouac their only shelter was the ponchos with which they had been provided before leaving Chattanooga; there was not a tent in the command.
For several days we had been in the region of perpetual snow; and soon we gathered about the fire which the arriero had kindled for our camp. Its warmth was grateful, despite our native woolen garments and heavy ponchos. The wind whistled ominously; a weird, senseless sound that smote the ear with madness.
There was but little clothing to be obtained in Chattanooga, and my command received only a few overcoats and a small supply of India-rubber ponchos. We could get no shoes, although we stood in great need of them, for the extra pair with which each man had started out from Murfreesboro' was now much the worse for wear.
I believe that a few miles higher up we shall get out of this atmosphere altogether. Still, the ponchos will be very useful, for it will be really cold up in the mountains. They serve for cloaks in the daytime and blankets at night. The best are made of the wool of the guanacos, a sort of llama.
"He's going along to pester us just as he has been doing probably worse, because he's had a night to think up a whole lot more fool questions to ask than he could think of yesterday." And it was even so. Monty, notebook in hand, insisted upon knowing the why and wherefore of every move each one of the girls made until they began to flee at his approach. "Why are you tying up your ponchos that way?
With heads rested upon their saddles, and their ponchos wrapped around them, they seek sleep, Ludwig first finding it; next Cypriano, though he lies long awake kept so by torturing thoughts. But tired nature at length overpowers him, and he too sinks into slumber. The gaucho alone surrenders not to the drowsy god; but, repelling his attacks, still lies reflecting.
The trick of the matador with his red cloak suggested itself in this moment of peril. Both had seen it performed Don Pablo often and knew something of the "way." In a moment both had stripped the ponchos from their shoulders, and, placing themselves
"Senor, if you are ready to rest I will now conduct you to another room, where you can have some rugs and ponchos to make a bed with." "If my presence here is not inconvenient," I returned, "I would rather remain and smoke by the fire." "You see, senor," he said, "I have arranged to meet some neighbours and friends, who are coming here to discuss matters of importance with me.
Facing each pair of men was a girl or woman whose duty it was to turn the clods over by hand. The men had taken off their ponchos, so as to secure greater freedom of action, but the women were fully clothed as usual, modesty seeming to require them even to keep heavy shawls over their shoulders.
