What was all this though even all this to the extraordinary dissipation that ensued, when Kit, walking into an oyster-shop as bold as if he lived there, and not so much as looking at the counter or the man behind it, led his party into a box a private box, fitted up with red curtains, white table-cloth, and cruet-stand complete and ordered a fierce gentleman with whiskers, who acted as waiter and called him, him Christopher Nubbles, 'sir, to bring three dozen of his largest-sized oysters, and to look sharp about it!

He decorates himself in his light-coloured paletot, blue neck-tie, and last dickey drives to Regent Street to purchase cigars to an oyster-shop redolent of saw-dust and lobsters rigs a very light pair of kids drives to, and alarms by his fast appearance, a few of his friends, who forthwith write off long woolly letters to relations in the country.

The young Doctor has a very small office and a very large sign, with a transparency at night big enough for an oyster-shop.

As to his ancient friends, the other old boys, at the Sir Somebody’s Head, he dropped off from them by gradual degrees; for, even when he did go there, Jonesvulgar fellow that Jonespersisted in asking ‘when it was to be?’ and ‘whether he was to have any gloves?’ together with other inquiries of an equally offensive nature: at which not only Harris laughed, but Jennings also; so, he cut the two, altogether, and attached himself solely to the blue young lady at the smart oyster-shop.

Jennings’s birthday, and they had had a brace of partridges for supper, and a brace of extra glasses afterwards, and Jones had been more than ordinarily amusingwhen his eyes rested on a newly-opened oyster-shop, on a magnificent scale, with natives laid, one deep, in circular marble basins in the windows, together with little round barrels of oysters directed to Lords and Baronets, and Colonels and Captains, in every part of the habitable globe.

The next morning, John Dounce was rather feverish with the extra brandy-and-water of the previous night; and, partly in the hope of cooling himself with an oyster, and partly with the view of ascertaining whether he owed the young lady anything, or not, went back to the oyster-shop.

Am I to be branded because I have made half a million by a good book? What if I have kept a gambling-house? From the back parlour of an oyster-shop my hazard table has been removed to this palace. Had the play been foul, this metamorphosis would never have occurred. It is true I am an usurer.

I see clearly there are great disadvantages in city life. If a friend and his wife drop in suddenly in the evening or to dine, it is monstrously inconvenient to have an oyster-shop round the corner whence to improvise a supper or a dinner. It would be so much better to have nothing but the village grocery a mile or two away. The advantages are conspicuous.
