On another paper he writes a word, this being a noun either proper or common. The questions being mixed are distributed the words likewise. The players write verses answering the questions and containing the words received. Needed: Twenty, or more, packages, wrapped in paper. Auction may be made a very merry game.

The adjective and the noun also change their forms with the varying cases. In its inflections, Anglo-Saxon resembles its sister language, the modern German. After the first feeling of strangeness has passed away, it is easy to recognize many of the old words. Take, for instance, this from Beowulf: "...ð=y h=e ðone f=eond ofercw=om, gehn=aegde helle g=ast."

I have seen, for instance, with a little overcrowding, continued fever grow up; and with a little more, typhoid fever; and with a little more, typhus, and all in the same ward or hut. Would it not be far better, truer, and more practical, if we looked upon disease in this light? For diseases, as all experience shows, are adjectives, not noun substantives.

Again, the word for bread in ancient Armenian is hats; yet the Armenian on London Bridge is made to say zhats, which is not the nominative of the Armenian noun for bread, but the accusative: now, critics, ravening against a man because he is a gentleman and a scholar, and has not only the power but also the courage to write original works, why did you not discover that weak point?

It is of course a question whether the noun dogon and its French antecedents are connected with the American verb dog-on. It is easy to conceive that such an epithet as dogon might get itself mixed up with the word dog, and so become an imprecation.

IV. The good news about Christ and God is the gospel. By far the most frequent form in which the word gospel occurs is that of the simple use of the noun with the definite article. This message is emphatically the good news. It is the tidings which men most of all want. It stands alone; there is no other like it. If this be not the glad tidings of great joy for the world, then there are none.

He plays, it is true, but only occasionally; though as a player at games of skill piquet, billiards, whist, he has no equal, unless it be Saville. But then Saville, entre noun, is suspected of playing unfairly." "And you are quite sure," said the placid Lady Erpingham, "that Mr. Godolphin is only indebted to skill for his success?" Constance darted a glance of fire at the speaker.

I certainly find several here for which I can perceive no more precedent in the well of "English undefiled," than for some of ours; for instance, this being "knocked up," which is variously inflected, as, for example, in the form of a participial adjective, as a "knocking up" affair; in the form of a noun, as when they say "such a person has got quite a knocking up," and so on.

"That makes no difference," said I; and, sitting with my legs over the pit, I forthwith began to decline an Armenian noun. "That a'n't cant," said the man; "no, nor gypsy either. Well, if you won't close, another will, I can't lose any more time," and forthwith he departed.

It has been observed that these names of gods are all epithets, or adjectives; and it has been supposed that there was originally a noun belonging to them, that they were all epithets of one great deity, or, as some are masculine and some feminine, of a great male and a great female deity.
