If Napoleon produced such an effect even at a distance, what an impression he must have made on those who were near him! Count Miot de Melito thus describes an Imperial reception in 1811: "Never had the Tuileries displayed more pomp and magnificence.

To this profound calculation of the credulity of mankind we may probably refer his allusions to his star. The present writer regards it as almost certain that his star was invoked in order to dazzle the vulgar herd. Indeed, if we may trust Miot de Melito, the First Consul once confessed as much to a circle of friends.
The accounts of such men as Miot de Melito, Raederer, etc., are most valuable, but these writers were not in that close contact with Napoleon enjoyed by Bourrienne. Bourrienne's position was simply unique, and we can only regret that he did not occupy it till the end of the Empire.
