No doubt Louis Craven had something to do with it. It would have alarmed him could he simply have found the time to think about it. Yet she was ready to see him on the 11th; and his confidence in his own powers of managing fate was tougher than ever. What pleasant lies he had told her at Lady Masterton's! Well! What passion ever yet but had its subterfuges?

"You have been a kind friend to me, Japhet, as well as a good son," replied my father, with some emotion. "Don't forget the apology at all events: I shall be unhappy until it be made." I arrived at Mr Masterton's, and walked into his room, when whom should I find in company with him but Harcourt.

I don't know who's got the brigades, but Masterton's carrying on with the division ... You'd better get up the line as fast as you can and take over from him. See the Army Commander. He'll be in Amiens tomorrow morning for a pow-wow. Laidlaw lay wearily back in his car and disappeared into the night, while I hurried to the train.

Masterton's brow again darkened. And his hymn of exultation had been mistaken by these people by this this wanton child! "It was no serenade," he replied, curtly; "it was in the praise of the Lord!" "Of how mooch?" "Of the Lord of Hosts of the Almighty in Heaven." He lifted his long arms reverently on high. "Oh!" she said, with a frightened look, slightly edging away from the wall.

"Japhet Newland." I sealed this letter, and when Timothy returned, I told him that I wished him, after my departure, to take it to Mr Masterton's, and not wait for an answer. I then, as I had an hour to spare, before the coach started, entered into a conversation with Timothy. I pointed out to him the unfortunate condition in which I found myself, and my determination to quit the metropolis.

The driver had vanished with his team into the shed; Masterton's fellow passenger on the box-seat, after a few whispered words to the landlord, also disappeared. "I see you've got Jake Poole with you," said one of the bar-room loungers to Masterton, indicating the passenger who had just left. "I reckon he's here on the same fool business." Masterton looked his surprise and mystification.

"I beg your pardon," said Masterton quickly, "but I was curious. I thought I might help you, and " "Make yourself another cat on the wall, eh? No; one is enough, thank you!" A frown lowered on Masterton's brow. "You don't understand me," he said, bluntly. "I did not know WHO was here."

Masterton could not speak to me when he arrived, but he gave me a wink and a smile, and I was satisfied. "Japhet," said my father, "you have no engagement to-morrow, I hope, because I shall call at Mr Masterton's on business, and wish you to accompany me." I replied, that "I should be most happy," and the conversation became general.

In a man of refined taste and education that bizarre and highly colored interior would have only provoked a smile or shrug; to Stephen Masterton's highly emotional nature, but artistic inexperience, strangely enough it was profoundly impressive.
