Accordingly he at once dispatched his pipe-bearer and confidential aid to summon various Spirits of his acquaintance, and set the time for them to come. Meanwhile he had a word of advice for his son-in-law Wassamo. "My son," said he, "some of these Manitoes that I have asked to come here are of a very wicked temper, and I warn you especially of that Island Spirit who wished to marry my daughter.
All the manitoes fled with fear, and the image came forth with a great noise and most terrible to behold. Its life had grown strong within it, for the fire had made it very fierce. Everything fled before it and cried "Machinitou! machinitou," which means a god, but an evil god.
The twelfth arrow he held a long time in his hands, and looked around keenly on every side to spy the manitoes he was after, but these manitoes were very cunning, and could change their form in a moment. All they feared was the boy's arrows, for these were magic weapons, which had been given to him by a good spirit, and had power to kill if aimed aright.
Now at one time Chemanitou was a very long time building an animal of such great bulk that it looked like a mountain upon the centre of the island, and all the manitoes from all parts came to see what it was.
Pauppukkeewis thanked him for this. Twenty young men offered themselves for the expedition. They went forward, and in a short time descried the lodge of the manitoes. Pauppukkeewis placed his friend and the warriors near him so that they might see all that passed, and then he went alone into the lodge. When he entered he found five horrible-looking manitoes eating.
The people had made many attempts to extirpate these manitoes, but the war parties that went out for this purpose were always unsuccessful. "I will go and see them," said Pauppukkeewis. The chief of the village warned him of the danger he would run, but finding him resolved, said "Well, if you will go, since you are my guest, I will send twenty warriors with you."
There he was given twelve magic arrows and told to shoot the manitoes of the North. "'They are the evil spirits of the air, said his guide. 'You must go to war against them. I have given you magic arrows that will kill them if your aim is true. "The boy placed an arrow with great care, but failed to kill a manito.
The lobster eyes were like a living coal. Chemanitou opened the side of the image, but he did not enter. He had given it hands and a chin. It could smile like the manitoes themselves. He made it walk all about the island of Metowac, that he might see how it would act. This he did by means of his will. He now put a little life into it, but he did not take out the fire.
"The boy let his last arrow fly toward the heart of the chief of the manitoes. But the evil spirit saw it coming and changed himself into a rock. "'How dare you try to kill me! cried the angry manito. 'Now you shall suffer. You shall evermore be like the trail of your arrow. "And he changed the boy into the lone lightning which you so often see, my children, in the northern sky."
To carry on his game, he could take almost any shape he pleased; he could be very foolish or very wise; very weak or very strong; very poor or very rich just as happened to suit his humor best. Whatever any one else could do, he would attempt without a moment's reflection. He was a match for any man he met, and there were few manitoes that could get the better of him.
