With that I turned to the companionway, lugging the winged man, and the others followed. In the Grip of Ludwig Leider Once we were below, LeConte joined us from the radio room. After taking a swift look at our prisoner, and listening to our account of what had happened above, he reported that the radio had been put out of commission by the crash but could be repaired.
To all of Aunt Nina's remonstrances, Philip's growlings, and the averted glances of her companions, Annette was deaf. "You are narrow-minded," she said laughingly. "I am interested in Monsieur LeConte simply as a study. He is entertaining; he talks well of his travels, and as for refusing to recognise the difference between us, why, he never dreamed of such a thing."
When it drops off a note but you will not know it except the Douglas squirrel tells you with his high, fluty chirrup from the pines' aerial gloom sign that some star watcher has caught the first far glint of the nearing sun. Whitney cries it from his vantage tower; it flashes from Oppapago to the front of Williamson; LeConte speeds it to the westering peaks.
We discovered that the three unaccounted-for men of the crew were lying forward, and found that two were dead and one lived a radio man named LeConte. He had two ribs broken. Half a dozen atomic guns remained to us, and we found intact one dynamo capable of generating the new cold light in considerable quantities. It was not an encouraging check-up, though.
Easy of access, either by train and steamer from Truckee, or by direct wagon or auto road via Truckee or the new boulevard from the south end of the Lake, Carnelian Bay attracts the real home-seeker. It has been the first section to fully realize what John LeConte has so ably set forth in another chapter on Tahoe as a Summer Residence.
Koto and LeConte kicked open the laboratory door and shot through. Captain Crane and I jumped after them. Through the Darkness of Orcon Gongs clanged, blue lights flashed on and off with the lurid glare of sulphur pits burning in hell, and screaming, winged Orconites, all mixed up together, pelted toward us as thickly as the snowflakes of a blizzard.
Neither Captain Crane, Koto, nor LeConte was in sight, but wherever I looked as I twisted my head slowly, I saw winged Orconites staring at me. They stood back against the walls of the cavern chamber, their wings folded, the antennae on their orange foreheads waving gently. None was close, but all watched with cold, intelligent interest.
Surely it was a gracious inspiration that selected this shady park as the “Poets’ Corner” of great, new Paris. Henri Murger, Leconte de Lisle, Théodore de Banville, Paul Verlaine, are here, and now Sainte-Beuve has come back to his favorite haunt.
In poetry, the reaction against Romanticism had begun with the Émaux et Camées of THÉOPHILE GAUTIER himself in his youth one of the leaders of the Romantic School; and it was carried further in the work of a group of writers known as the Parnassiens the most important of whom were LECONTE DE LISLE, SULLY PRUDHOMME, and HEREDIA. Their poetry bears the same relation to that of Musset as the history of Renan bears to that of Michelet, and the prose of Flaubert to that of Hugo.
It was truly wonderful. Now and then Annette would say to papa as if to reassure herself, "And when Monsieur Cherbart says I am ready to go to Paris, I may go, papa?" And papa would say a "Certainly" that would send her back to the piano with renewed ardour. As for Monsieur LeConte, he was the idol of New Orleans.
