Joseph LeConte, from whom LeConte Lake is named, the best-beloved professor of the University of California, and its most noted geologist, in the year 1870 started out with a group of students of his geology classes, and made a series of Ramblings in the High Sierras.

In 1860 the sky was not so grey or so low; and the Poèmes Antiques of Leconte de Lisle, the Études d'histoire religieuse of Renan, and the Essais de Critique of Taine, are possibly not unworthy to be placed in parallel or comparison with the first writings of Flaubert.

SCIENCE. In astronomy, Young, Henry Draper, and Langley may be named; in geology, Dana and Leconte; in physiology, Flint and Dalton; Marsh, in palaeontology, and Leidy, in zoeology; Professor Whitney is an able writer on philology and Oriental literature.

As LeConte, working in the radio room close off the main saloon, completed a connection which had been broken, he called to us that he was making progress, and a moment later we heard the click of his sending key and the shrill squeal of a powerful electric arc breaking across the transmission points of his set.

At that moment I also had a queer impression that the sunlight was growing brighter on all the glittering rocks, and that some new feeling was creeping into the air. "Doctor Weeks!" LeConte cried across the distance between us. "Come at once!" Terror had laid hold of the man. Captain Crane, Koto and I began to run to him. "What is it?" I shouted. "I don't know," came the thin answer.

The spikes had seemingly been cleared off the tunnel roof and left to be carried away. They were pointed enough to be used for stabbing, and looked heavy enough to make stout clubs. Captain Crane smothered an exclamation as she glanced at the pile, and Koto and LeConte smiled.

Layard, E.L., on the instance of rationality in a cobra; on the pugnacity of Gallus Stanleyi. Laycock, Dr., on vital periodicity; theroid nature of idiots. Leaves, autumn, tints useless. Lecky, Mr., on the sense of duty; on suicide; on the practice of celibacy; his view of the crimes of savages; on the gradual rise of morality. Leconte, J.L., on the stridulant organ in the Coprini and Dynastini.

Instead of leaping, I staggered on for two short steps, then stopped because I could stagger no farther. Looking back at the cruiser, I saw that LeConte, still on the gangway, had stopped also. Captain Crane and Koto were making weak, despairing signs at me from the entrance to the control room. Both of them looked as sick as cats.

Hence it will be seen that the grooving and marking, the fluting and beveling, the planing and smoothing processes of the ice are materially aided and abetted by the very hardness and weight of the granite and other rocks it carries with it. Now let Joseph LeConte take up the theme and give us of the rich treasure-store of his knowledge and observation.

LeConte, to whom we sent a figure, supposes that it may possibly be a larva of Harpalus, or Pangus caliginosus. It is evidently a young Carabid. The under side is represented. The Insects of May. During this month there is great activity among the insects.
