Indeed the vision of the Grail in the early Sir Galahad is doubtless happier than the allegorical handling of a theme so obscure, remote, and difficult, in the Idylls. He wrote his Boadicea, a piece magnificent in itself, but of difficult popular access, owing to the metrical experiment. In the autumn of 1860 he revisited Cornwall with F. T. Palgrave, Mr Val Prinsep, and Mr Holman Hunt.

The works in connection with the Victoria Bridge were begun on the 22nd July, 1854, when the first stone was laid, and continued uninterruptedly during a period of years, until the 17th December, 1859, when the bridge was finished and taken off the contractor’s hands. It was formally opened for traffic early in 1860; though Robert Stephenson did not live to see its completion.

Then the thought came to him to enter the lecture field himself, and become the utterer of his own witticisms the mouthpiece of his own jests. On the 10th of November, 1860, Charles Browne, whose fame, traveling in his letters from Boston to San Francisco, had now become national, grasped the hands of his hundreds of New York admirers.

His sympathies were with the slave-holders; he doubted his right to coerce a seceding state; his friendships were largely with southern statesmen and yet, to his credit be it stated, on January 8, 1860, after secession had become a thing assured, he seems suddenly to have seen his duty clearly, and in a special message, declared his intention to collect the revenues and protect public property in all the states, and to use force if necessary.

On the 14th of November, 1860, Alexander H. Stephens addressed the Legislature of Georgia, and in a portion of that address replying to a speech made before the same Body the previous evening by Mr. Our friend stated that forty-eight years of our Government was under the administration of Southern Presidents. Well, these Fishing Bounties began under the rule of a Southern President, I believe.

It was occasionally watered, but received no other special treatment. I measured this tree in 1860, and found it, at four feet from the ground, and entirely above the spread of the roots, two feet and four inches in diameter. A new measurement in 1871 gave a diameter of two feet eight inches, being an increase of four inches in eleven years, a slower rate than that of preceding years.

He sent his Cooper Union speech in advance to several for advice, and they, I am told, changed not a word. Of his debates with Douglas , his speech in Cooper Union, New York, 1860, his oration at the dedication of the Soldiers' Cemetery at Gettysburg, and of his second inaugural address, it has been said that no one of them has been surpassed in its separate field.

Occasionally when I have occasion to recur to them I am myself nonplussed, for they did not sound so terrible at the time. My father was a leader of the Union wing of the Democratic Party headed in 1860 the Douglas presidential ticket in Tennessee and remained a Unionist during the War of Sections.

"Until the facts of Nature are shown to have been mistaken by those who have collected them, and that they have a different meaning from that now generally assigned to them, I shall therefore consider the transmutation theory as a scientific mistake, untrue in its facts, unscientific in its method, and mischievous in its tendency." Silliman's 'Journal, July, 1860, pages 143, 154.
