Still a few are remembered; such as the yellow-tailed snapper, striped snapper, pork-fish, angel-fish, cat-fish, hound-fish, the grouper, sucking-fish, and so on. Both harbor and deep sea fishing afford the visitor to Nassau excellent amusement, and many sportsmen go thither annually from New York solely for its enjoyment.

"That's a nice grouper," said he "ten pound, I think." This is a percoid, Serranus nigritus of Holbrook, and one of the very best table-fishes of these waters. We took six or eight more sheepshead, and the captain caught a handsome, active fish of about four pounds weight, resembling the squetegue or weakfish of New York, but having dark spots on the back, like the lake-trout of the Adirondacks.

Hundreds of fish the grouper, the red snapper, the noble baracouta, the mullet, and many others, unknown to northern seas played round the ship, occasionally rising to seize some floating food, that perchance had been thrown overboard.

Colin shuddered a little as he looked at the groupers swimming idly about and said: "Don't you suppose it was just because there were so many of them in this small pool? I hardly think a grouper would attack anything as large as a dog out in the open sea. They're much the same sort of fish as bass, you know." "No, sir," the keeper answered; "I never 'eard of a grouper bein' dangerous out at sea.

This is the salt-water trout, so called, though it is not a salmonine: it is Otolithus Caroliniensis, the weakfish being Otolithus regalis. Next I hooked a strong fish which seemed disposed to run under the mangrove roots. "That's a big grouper," cried Pecetti. "Keep him away from the roots, or you will lose him."

Balaam's ass was a joke to this fellow." I have already said that the water was not quite three fathoms deep, and it was so clear that I could see down to the very sand, and there were the fish cruising about in great numbers. "Haul in, Wagtail you have hooked him," and up came a beautiful black grouper, about four pounds weight.

They are, however, well known to the native pilots, and serve as a safeguard from nightly surprise or invasion. Varieties of fish are found here, beautiful to the eye and delicious to the taste: of these, the best is the red grouper.

Three other boats came out across the reef, ventured a little way in the Gulf Stream, and then went back to grouper and barracuda. But that one boatman, B., stuck to us. And right away things began to happen to his anglers. No one so lucky in strikes as a green hand! I saw them get nine strikes without hooking a fish. And there appeared to be a turmoil on board that boat.
