See note to "The Two Races of Men" for an account of Lamb's copy, now in the British Museum. No sympathy with them. After these words, in the London Magazine, came, "nor with Mr. Gifford's Ben Jonson." This edition by Lamb's old enemy, William Gifford, editor of the Quarterly, was published in 1816. Lamb's copy of Ben Jonson was dated 1692, folio. It is now in America, I believe.
"It means that we've got to make this hole look like a barren hole, and keep it looking that way if we have to handle every piece of rock that comes out of it in our fingers," I said. "Just that," Barrett asserted, and then we went on with the drilling. We arranged our routine that evening over a supper of Gifford's preparing.
Gifford's instinctive genius of the inborn hatred of servility for independence, of dulness for talent, of cunning and impudence for truth and honesty. It costs him no effort to execute his disreputable task in being the tool of a crooked policy, he but labours in his natural vocation.
The army advanced, with Lord Gifford's scouts skirmishing in front, Rait's guns and rockets leading, followed by the 42nd Highlanders, the 23rd Fusiliers, and the Rifle Brigade in succession, and on either flank the Naval Brigade and Russell's and Wood's regiments, that on the right under command of Colonel Wood, and on the left of Colonel McLeod.
Gifford's remark had been made with his eyes fixed on his friend's fiancée, to whom at that moment Miss Morriston was handing the refilled cup of tea. A hand of each girl was upon the saucer as the words were uttered; by whose fault it was let fall it was impossible to say. But the slight cry of dismay had come from Miss Tredworth. "Oh, I am so sorry," she exclaimed, colouring with vexation.
Punctually at the appointed time Gervase Henshaw was shown into Gifford's room. Kelson had received from his friend a hint of what was afoot and had naturally offered his services to back Gifford up, but they were refused. "It is very kind of you, Harry," Gifford had said, "and just what one would have expected from you.
So back to church, and heard a good sermon of Mr. Gifford's at our church, upon "Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven and its righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." A very excellent and persuasive, good and moral sermon. Shewed, like a wise man, that righteousness is a surer moral way of being rich, than sin and villainy. Then home to dinner, where Mr.
I'll do my best and there shall be no delay." The two men thanked him and walked out to the station yard, where a porter waited with the rest of Gifford's luggage. "There is a gentleman here going to the Lion" he said with a rather embarrassed air; "I told him your fly was engaged, sir; but he said perhaps you would let him share it with you." Kelson looked black.
"Oh, there you are, dear Giff," she cried; "we were just looking for you. Pray, how is Mr. Denner?" Gifford's serious face answered her without words, and none of the group spoke for a moment. Then Gifford said, "It cannot last much longer. You see, he suffers very much at night; it doesn't seem as though he could live through another."
Denner's danger, which to some extent she realized, did not impress her so deeply; perhaps because that was, in a manner, the result of his own will, and perhaps, too, because no one quite knew how much the little gentleman suffered and how near death he was. Lois had heard Gifford's voice as she went into the sick-room, and his words of blame rung again in her ears. They emphasized Mrs.
