Gilbert Crosby's actual experience was not equal to his skill. Once only had he fought a duel, and had wounded his man on that occasion. He was confident of his skill as he faced Lord Rosmore, but he knew that he must lack something of that assurance which comes to the persistent duellist, that detachment of self which so often helps to victory.

On the 15th and 16th of December, 1868, the four societies of the Armies of the Cumberland, Tennessee, Ohio, and Georgia, held a joint reunion at Chicago, at which were present over two thousand of the surviving officers and soldiers of the war. The ceremonies consisted of the joint meeting in Crosby's magnificent opera-house, at which General George H. Thomas presided.

"Have you got a revolver?" asked Higgins loudly. "Sure! You don't s'pose I'd go up against that kind of a man without a gun, do you?" "Oh, goodness!" some one whispered in Crosby's ear. "But he ain't armed," argued Higgins. "If he'd had a gun don't you s'pose he'd shot that dog an' got away long before he did?" "That shows how much you know about these crooks, Higgins," said the other loftily.

Miss Crosby smiled. "Do you like it? I did it this summer. Are you interested in drawing?" she asked. "Oh, yes!" Lois's tone was surprised as if any one could doubt such a well known fact. "Then you must be Lois Farwell," she said. "Why, I am." Miss Crosby's smile broadened. "I thought you were; you see Mrs. Baird told me " she hesitated, "well it doesn't matter what.

"Come on," says I. "We'll go and see Eddie." We went up to Crosby's store and called Eddie outside. He looked to be estimable and freckled; and he had chills and fever when I made my proposition. "At five o'clock?" says he, "for a thousand dollars? Please don't wake me up! Well, you are the rich uncle retired from the spice business in India! I'll buy out old Crosby and run the store myself."

"What did I tell you about the way of the transgressor?" said Anne to Grace, as they walked home from school that day. "It certainly is hard enough this time," said Grace. "But," she added, as she thought of Julia Crosby's recent accusation, "the way of the righteous isn't always easy." The juniors themselves hardly felt the weight of their punishment more than did Grace Harlowe.

Crosby's attention was unclaimed for the moment, Patty turned to him, saying, with great animation: "Oh, Mr. Crosby, MAY I ask you something? I'm AWFULLY ignorant, you know, and you're so wise." "Yes, yes, what is it?" And the great Oriental scholar looked benignly at her over his glasses.

"Arrest me?" exclaimed Crosby in great amazement. "What have I done?" "No back talk now, young feller. You're the man we're after, an' it won't do you any good to chew the rag about it." "If you don't turn that horrid pistol away, I'll faint," cried femininity in collapse. Crosby's arm went about her waist and she hid her terror-stricken eyes on his shoulder.

"Have a care, mistress," said Martin in a low tone, and, looking down at him, Barbara saw that where the hearth-stone had been there was now a hole. "There is one way that is not watched to-night, I warrant this way." He rose quickly from the stool and touched Crosby's arm. "Go first. There are steps. Take my sword as well as your own. Then you, mistress. I come last to shut this up again."

Well, you /are/ the rich uncle retired from the spice business in India! I'll buy out old Crosby and run the store myself."
