It herds in troops of from five or ten to fifty in number, and is found upon the banks of all the great South American rivers, where it has for its chief enemy the fierce jaguar. The Guinea Pig is one of the family of cavies. This beautiful little animal is too well-known to require description.

They have all strength enough to break the ligneous tegument of the seed; they get out the kernel, and carry it to the tops of the trees.
Neither cavies nor rabbits are especially intelligent but they do learn to know their master or at least the one who feeds them. Pet rats and mice are in the same class as rabbits but they should always have a coop that they will not gnaw out of. There is even a mouse club. It is in Europe and has over a thousand members.
The Little Chief is one of these tiny creatures long known; but late explorers of the Rocky Mountain regions have discovered a species still smaller than the little chief. The Cavies appear to represent the hare family in the tropical parts of America.
It was altogether a singular assemblage of wild animals a zoological garden of the wilderness. Our party, concealed by bushes, looked on for some time. They noticed that not one of all the living things was under the tree. On the contrary, they formed monkeys, cavies, parrots, and all a sort of ring around it, but at such a distance that none of the brandies were above them! Why was this?
