He made no sound, and submitted silently to the ministrations of his trainers. Flynn was philosophical. "The fortunes of war, Misther Canby. 'T'was a gran' fight, as fine a mill as you'll see in a loife time wid the best man losin' 'S a shame, sor; but Masther Jerry w'u'd have his way bad cess to 'm. You can't swap swipes wid a gorilla, sor. It ain't done."

Their books represent, Professor Canby * believes, the adventures of the American subconsciousness, the promptings of forgotten memories, a racial tradition of contact with the wilderness, and hence one of the most genuinely American traits of our literature. * "Back to Nature," by H. S. Canby, "Yale Review," July, 1917.

The Widow Canby lived in an old-fashioned house, surrounded on three sides by orchards several acres in extent. She was well to do, but made no pretence to style. Many thought her extremely eccentric but that was only because they did not know her. The day I came to her assistance she made me stay to supper, and when I left it was under promise to call the next day and bring my sister along.

"I'm with the show," said Canby, an expression foreign to his lips and a clear case of inspiration. The distrustful man waved him on. Wanda Malone was leaning against the wall at the other end of the passageway, studying her manuscript. She did not look up until he paused beside her. "Miss Malone," he began. "I have come I have come I have-ah " These were his first words to her.

I have often been asked, since, what I thought of the arrangements Mr. Berry made for the meeting of Gen. Canby, Col. Thomas and Captain Jack, but I have always refrained from answering that question any farther than that it seemed to me that a school boy ten years of age should have known better than to have made such a bargain as he did, knowing the nature of Indians as well as he claimed to.

B. Phelps accompanied his wife when the latter called to discuss the Canby invitation. His coming was unusual, the Dotts had seen comparatively little of him since their arrival in Scarford. Daniel was glad he came. Black and he were not altogether congenial; the captain would not have chosen him as an intimate; but at least there would be someone present with whom he could exchange a word. Mr.

Canby, it must be a pretty bad place to live in," was the final comment, and I made no effort to undeceive him. It is not my intention to dwell too long upon the first stages of my tutorship, which presented few difficulties not easily surmounted, but it is necessary in order to understand Jerry's character that I set down a few facts which show certain phases of his development.

Jack and his band, but Jack refused to have anything to do with the commissioners, although willing to talk to Judges Roseborough and Steele of Yreka. These gentlemen proceeded to the camp in the lava beds and held a conference and found that Jack was anxious for peace; was tired of war; did not know the commissioners; but wanted to talk to the chief soldiers, Generals Canby and Gillem.

The object would be threefold: first, to attract as much of the enemy's force as possible, to insure success to Canby; second, to destroy the enemy's line of communications and military resources; third, to destroy or capture their forces brought into the field. Tuscaloosa and Selma would probably be the points to direct the expedition against.

All agreed that the whole regiment would desert if these men were not brought back. Several officers volunteered on the spot to go after them; and, as the soldiers could not be trusted, it was useless to send any but officers in pursuit. Some one went to report the affair to the adjutant-general, Canby, and he to General Riley.
