Over sand and stones, past tall, prickly cactus-plants, in hot pursuit all flew at racing speed. It was a long chase; for the old grey boar was speedy, cunning, and a master of wiles.
Neither could answer them; and the girl turned to the fence, and again looked through. As she did so she saw one of the soldiers from his finer dress evidently an officer separate from the rest, and come galloping towards the house. In a few moments he drew near, and, reining his horse close up to the fence, looked over the tops of the cactus-plants.
There was a deep ditch under the wall, filled with cactus-plants and dry grass. We lay in the bottom of this for some minutes, panting with fatigue. Our limbs were stiff and swollen, and we could hardly stand upright. A little delay then was necessary, to bring back the blood and determine our future course. "We had best ter keep the gully," whispered Lincoln.
Lucien examined it with great curiosity; and when he saw the weaver change the color of her threads, he understood how the Indian women covered the bottoms of their petticoats with those extraordinary patterns which their fancy produces. Within a short distance of the hut there were some nopal cactus-plants.
Sitting down on the bank, I held out the rod to my companion, who at once seized it, and, thus supported, gradually managed to bring up all our hunting-gear, and ultimately himself, when, instead of pulling "Master Sunbeam's" ears, he gave him a kiss as a reward for his ingenious idea. About two hundred paces farther on the verdant ravine came to an end, and we were surrounded by cactus-plants.
There were no signs of life there. He widened the aperture to the size of his body, and crawled through, knife in hand. He raised himself gradually and silently. Nothing but tall rank weeds, cactus-plants, and aloes. He was behind the range of the dwellings. He was in the common. He was free! He started towards the open country, skulking under the shadow of the brushwood.
The cliffs increased a thousand feet in height, and in many places the water completely filled the channel between them; but occasionally the cañon opened into a little park, from the grassy carpet of which sprang crimson flowers on the stems of pear-shaped cactus-plants, patches of blue and yellow blossoms, and a fragrant Spiræa.
No one entered until the hole was made, and the captive had the satisfaction to feel the cold air rushing through the aperture! He stopped his work and listened. There was no sound on that side of the prison. All was silence and darkness. He pressed his head forward, and peered through. The night was dark, but he could see weeds and wild cactus-plants growing close to the wall. Good!
