Started at five with Yeomanry, Bushmen, and Buffs, as before, but were delayed two hours outside town, waiting for some traction-engines, which puffed asthmatically at the bottom of a drift, unable to get up. Washed in a river with great zest. Fresh mutton for supper. Turned in with orders for reveillé at 4 A.M. But at 11.30 P.M. we were all awakened by "Come on, get up and harness up."
His heart was sick for Cairo, for he had been three months on the river; and Mrs. Henshaw was in Cairo Mrs. Henshaw, the widow of Henshaw of the Buffs, who lived with her brother, a stone's-throw from the Esbekieh Gardens. Fielding longed for Cairo, but Beni Hassan intervened. The little man who worried Ibrahim urged him the way his private inclinations ran, but he was obdurate: duty must be done.
In the morning, before using the buffs, brush both as clean as possible, in order to free them from dust; then with the blade of a pair of shears, held perpendicular, rub the buffs from end to end; then knock them both together in order to free them from all dust or other substances, occasionally exposing them to the sun or to the fire.
They could give no assistance. The Buffs were nearly a mile away. Things looked grave. Colonel Goldney himself tried to re-form the men. The Sikhs, who now numbered perhaps sixty, were hard pressed, and fired without effect. Then some one who it was is uncertain ordered the bugler to sound the "charge." The shrill notes rang out not once but a dozen times. Every one began to shout.
These always interest us from the generosity of their height and girth, and from their great variety of color-tones, induced by the patchy scaling of the bark soft grays, buffs, greens, and ivory whites prevailing.
But men, horses, and bullocks were equally exhausted after a long twenty-four hours' marching and fighting. Could he reach and cross it before his enemies, he was safe. The Klipkraal Drift had in the meanwhile been secured by the Buffs, the West Ridings, and the Oxfordshire Light Infantry after a spirited little action which, in the rapid rush of events, attracted less attention than it deserved.
The covering party of the second division consisted of 100 men of the 3d Buffs; the storming party, with ladders, of 160 of the 3d Buffs, supported by 260 of the 3d Buffs, 300 of the 41st, with 200 of the 62d, and 100 of the 41st. The rest of the second division were in reserve. The first and Highland divisions were to be formed in the third parallel.
Camels to carry the wounded were sent up from Panjkora. The Buffs escorted the long convoy down the line of communications. Every one in camp was sorry to see the last of them.
Dicky's voice was hard now. "Who was he?" "Heatherby Bob Heatherby!" "Bob Heatherby gad! Fielding, I'm sorry I couldn't have guessed, old man. Mrs. Henshaw's brother!" Fielding nodded. Dicky turned his head away; for Fielding was in love with Mrs. Henshaw, the widow of Henshaw of the Buffs. He realised now why Fielding loathed Hasha so. "Forgive me for asking him to mess, guv'nor."
His assistant had seen them too. "Quite so," said Simms; "they are friends of mine and I hoped to see them again here this evening perhaps they are waiting in the lounge." He finished his soda water and walked off. He sought the telephone office and rang up Curzon Street. The Duke of Melford had dined at home but had gone out. He was at the Buffs' Club in Piccadilly. Simms drove to the Club.
