It would seem that some notions respecting the Azores were obscurely entertained towards the end of the fourteenth century, as islands nearly in their position are laid down in the maps of 1380. In the library of St. Marc, at Venice, there is a map drawn by Bianco, in 1436.
On the map of Bianco reproduced in Winsor, I. p. 54 the name "Ya de Lamansatanaxio" distinctly appears, and this was translated by both Formaleoni and Humboldt as meaning "the Island of the Hand of Satan." D'Avezac was the first to suggest that the reference was to two separate islands, the one named "De la Man" or "Danman," and the other "Satanaxio."
But the map which was distinctively the outcome of the new discoveries was the so-called "Camaldolese map of Fra Mauro," drawn by Mauro, Bianco, and other draughtsmen during the year 1457, in the convent of Murano in Venice. King Alfonso of Portugal himself paid the expenses of its construction, and sent charts showing the recent discoveries.

She is always cheerful and good-humored." To indicate the color of the eyes, Cagnolo uses the word "bianco," which in the language of the people still means blue. In the folk songs of Tuscany collected by Tigri, there is frequent mention of occhi bianchi, that is, "blue eyes."
Arrived at the laboratory, the jars are turned over to Signer Lo Bianco and his assistants, who sort the material, and send to each investigator in the workrooms whatever he may have asked for. Of course surface-skimming is not the only method of securing material for the laboratory.
