Arnold makes perfection of literary execution the be-all and end-all of excellence in literature; indeed one does not see that he at all exaggerates its importance. Those whom he mentions as great writers were for the most part second-rate men second-rate men that is as measured by the standard of the ages; and it does not appear that he thinks of them otherwise than as such.
They were not the be-all and the end-all. It was like being part of a machine. He himself happened to be a controlling, central part, the masses of men were the parts variously controlled. This was merely as it happened. As well get excited because a central hub drives a hundred outer wheels or because the whole universe wheels round the sun.
I quite agree with that commendation; but what a curious thing it is that one should now find it necessary to urge that this is the be-all and end-all of scientific instruction the sine qua non, the absolutely necessary condition, and yet that it was insisted upon more than two hundred years ago by one of the greatest men science ever possessed in this country, William Harvey.
At this stage of my life it was my be-all and end-all. My father was a most impractical man. He would sit in his office as foreman, read the New York Herald, and suck at an unlit cigar, telling anyone who listened how he would be quite happy to retire and run a little chicken farm somewhere the rest of his life.
'Do you think love is the be-all and the end-all of life? Birkin asked, with direct, attentive seriousness. 'Of my own life? said Gerald. 'Yes. There was a really puzzled pause. 'I can't say, said Gerald. 'It hasn't been, so far. 'What has your life been, so far? 'Oh finding out things for myself and getting experiences and making things GO.
"It is the custom of our people" is the final word. And what has become customary is by caste enactment made obligatory. And woe be to him who defies caste. And thus the caste-prescribed trade becomes the be-all and the end-all of life. These four the connubial, the convivial, the contactual, and the occupational are the constant factors of the caste existence and activity in India.
So when the gloaming deepens over the world, like the gaze of the dark eyes of the beloved, then my whole being tells me that work alone cannot be the truth of life, that work is not the be-all and the end-all of man, for man is not simply a serf even though the serfdom be of the True and the Good.
Of the tundra it is enough to say that all depends on the reindeer. This animal is the be-all and end-all of Lapp existence. When Nansen, after crossing Greenland, sailed home with his two Lapps, he called their attention to the crowds of people assembled to welcome them at the harbour. "Ah," said the elder and more thoughtful of the pair, "if they were only reindeer!"
It became apparent to various thinkers that the humanitarian view of the question was not its be-all and end-all; that some facts and considerations per contra had to be taken into account; and that what one train of thought and feeling denounced as a mere self-condemned wrong might, according to another, be even regarded as a higher right.
In this kind of novel the closed door of "The Author of Beltraffio" must be broken open; passion must appear upon the scene and utter its last word; passion is the be-all and the end-all, the plot and the solution, the protagonist and the deus ex machinâ in one.
