A strong French division had marched into Verdun that morning, and the new volunteers were all divided among different corps. Julian, who now stood over six feet, was told off to a Grenadier regiment. A uniform was at once given to him from those carried with the baggage of the regiment, and the sergeant of the company in which he had been placed took him to its barrack-room.
"Boudru going to shut eye?" said the fat infantry sergeant suggestively. "The cots are down and the beds unrolled," said the R.H.A. man falling into the diction of the barrack-room. "No," said Boudru. "You must tell me for the last time the story about the wicked German baby killer who was turned into a pig.
"Will you come with me up town?" said Armstrong to Miles one day, as he was about to quit the barrack-room. "I'm going to see if there's any news of my Emmy." "I did not know you expected her," said Miles. "Come along, I'm ready."
The whole of that free afternoon he stayed in the barrack-room, dreaming away comfortably, and looking at the first-year men, who now, when the "old gang" had left, would suddenly have about twice as much to do as hitherto. If a non-commissioned officer crossed the threshold, he jumped up and stood at attention, quickly and accurately, just as he had done at any time during these last two years.
At one o'clock to-day the bell rung for prayers, and all hands were collected into the upper barrack-room of the beacon-house, when the usual service was performed. The wind blew very hard in the course of last night from N.E., and to-day the sea ran so high that no boat could approach the rock.
The first was the mortar-gallery, where the mortar for the lighthouse was mixed as required; it also supported the forge. The second was the cook-room. The third the apartment of the engineer and his assistants; and the fourth was the artificers' barrack-room. This house was of course built of wood, but it was firmly put together, for it had to pass through many a terrific ordeal.
In the barrack-room it is considered the right thing to grumble, or "grouse" as it is called, while one is working hardest.
Antoine, ill at ease, whistled a barrack-room air; his father whipped the nag; and his mother, from where she sat in the corner, kept casting sly glances at the negress, whose forehead and cheekbones shone in the sunlight like well-polished shoes. Wishing to break the ice, Antoine turned round. "Well," said he, "we don't seem inclined to talk." "We must have time," replied the old woman.
In one of the narrowest parts of the street a small newspaper shop made him stop. It was betwixt a hairdresser's and a tripeseller's, and had an outdoor display of idiotic prints, romantic balderdash mixed with filthy caricatures fit for a barrack-room. In front of these 'pictures, a lank hobbledehoy stood lost in reverie, while two young girls nudged each other and jeered.
We shall best see how far these doubts were deserved by Hereward, or how far they were unjust, by following his course after he left his barrack-room.
