This visitor came to Barnum's office, and told him of a wonderful girl, only seventeen years old, who lived near him at Pictou. Barnum soon sent an agent up there, who brought the young lady back to New York. She was an intelligent girl, and, despite her enormous stature, was decidedly good-looking.

The story of another of Barnum's greatest hits must be told in his own words: "In December, 1861," he related, "I was visited at the Museum by a most remarkable dwarf, who was a sharp, intelligent little fellow, with a deal of drollery and wit. He had a splendid head, was perfectly formed, and was very attractive, and, in short, for a 'showman, he was a perfect treasure.

The New York and New Haven Railroad Company seemed determined to move heaven and earth to prevent the passage of this law. The halls of legislation were thronged with railroad lobbyists, who button-holed nearly every member. Barnum's motives were attacked, and the most foolish slanders were circulated.

The Bowery, too, is a great place for shoppin'. There everybody sells cheaper'n anybody else, and nobody pretends to make no profit on their goods." "Where's Barnum's Museum?" asked Frank. "Oh, that's down nearly opposite the Astor House," said Dick. "Didn't you see a great building with lots of flags?" "Yes."

"I'll never forget the first time it occurred to me when I was reading Darwin that if the ark were as large as Barnum's Circus and the Natural History Museum put together, it couldn't have held a thousandth of the species on earth. It was a blow." "I don't know what we're coming to," exclaimed Mrs. Waring gently.

As I saw he was getting angry, I told him all about it, told him how we had hired a stranded canal-boat and had fitted it up as a house, and how we lived so cosily in it, and had called it "Rudder Grange," and how we had taken a boarder. "Well!" said he, "this is certainly surprising. I'm coming out to see you some day. It will be better than going to Barnum's."

"There is a boy at home who came to New York a month ago, and went to Barnum's, and has been talking about it ever since, so I suppose it must be worth seeing." "They've got a great play at the Old Bowery now," pursued Dick. "'Tis called the 'Demon of the Danube. The Demon falls in love with a young woman, and drags her by the hair up to the top of a steep rock where his castle stands."

It went something like this, and I heard a little English boy sing it: "Alice said to Jumbo: 'I love you! Jumbo said to Alice: 'I don't believe you do; 'Cause if you love me truly, As you say you do, Come over to America To Barnum's show!" "That's the song they used to sing about Jumbo, more than twenty years ago," said Umboo. "My! How can you remember so far back?" asked Chako.

Barnum's spirit, although saddened, is not broken. He sees the objects of his care and best management snatched from him, and yet he announces that he will immediately send on for two more whales of the same sort. We shall soon forget the lost whales in contemplation of the new. Such is life, it is well known. "The decease may be attributed in a great measure to bear.

Maybe it's an agent of Barnum's, who expects to make a fortun' by exhibitin' the valooable wardrobe of a gentleman of fashion." Dick did not shed many tears over his loss, as, in his present circumstances, he never expected to have any further use for the well-worn garments.
