He declined drinking, and was backed in his abstemiousness by Phelim, who knew that sobriety on the part of Sam would leave himself more liquor. Phelim, therefore, drank for them both, and that to such excess, that Larry, by Appleton's advice, left him at his father's in consequence of his inability to proceed homewards.
Or you can buy Appleton's, which is really quite good, for sixty dollars a set. I do not mean to have you rest on any encyclopA|dia, but you will find one at the start an excellent guide-post. Suppose you have the old EncyclopA|dia Americana. You will find there that the "Roman Catholic Church" is treated by two writers, one a Protestant, and one a Catholic.
Appleton's Magazine published my first serious attempt at fiction. It was a short story entitled, "Two Social Pariahs." The cry of peonage was in the air and I arranged with Appleton's Magazine for a series of articles on the subject. Dressed as a labourer I went to the muscle market of New York and got hired. To do this I had to assume a foreign accent and look as slovenly as possible.
"Of course, I shan't see defenceless women suffer " Lounsbury was piqued. "Not altogether defenceless, Colonel. But I can't stay at the shack " "True, true. Why not ask Mrs. Martin, Major Appleton's sister, to go over. Then you might guard from the barn, if they have one." "That's a splendid suggestion, sir. It would solve the difficulty." "I'd be glad to speak to Mrs. Martin about it."
A boy walking down Girard Avenue, as Appleton got into the cab, had been whistling the tune of "They're After Me," a thing that was new to the variety stage last fall, but is dead this summer. The air, whistled by the boy, clung to Appleton's sense, and he unconsciously hummed it to himself as his cab went on its grinding way over the stones.
What he considers the most valuable testimony under this head appeared about two years ago in an article in Appleton's Popular Science Monthly, written by Professor N. S. Shaler of Harvard University, and Dean of the Scientific School. Take this passage:
He found it in Appleton's Encyclopedia, and, determining to have only the best, he saved his luncheon money, walked instead of riding the five miles to his Brooklyn home, and, after a period of saving, had his reward in the first purchase from his own earnings: a set of the Encyclopedia.
Fallon danced about, waving his arms and shouting: "Th' new camp'll go t'rough hell a whoopin'! Bill'll be boss, an' th' min'll tear out th' bone to bate Moncrossen!" Order was finally restored, and the three seated themselves while Bill recounted his adventures. Appleton's brow clouded as he learned the details of the bird's-eye plot. "So that's the way he worked it?" he exclaimed.

"No, I did not," was Mrs. Appleton's calm reply. "Not after such an insult! Pardon me but I should call it a breach of politeness for any one to remain in the house of another under such circumstances." "But, Louisa, you must remember that there are exceptions to every general rule; and also, that the same act may be good or bad, according to the end which the actor has in view.
