It takes more brains to pursue a mutual interest with a man than to slump down without noticing him into being an altruist with him.
On the other hand those who start out with ideals of altruism and service, specialists in the will to fellowship, generally lose enthusiasm for this and turn slowly, half reluctantly, to the will for power. In life's cycle it is common to see the egotist turn philanthropist, and the altruist, the idealist, lose faith and become an egotist. How does this apply to the nervous housewife?
With love-lit eyes Tiara walked unfalteringly in his direction and, with a smile for which Ensal the great altruist, mark you, fancied he would have been willing to return from a thousand Africas, she extended her hand to him in greeting. There is a saying among the Negroes to the effect that "If you give a Negro an inch he will take an ell."
But what, then, is the character that actually marks the American that is, in chief? If he is not the exalted monopolist of liberty that he thinks he is nor the noble altruist and idealist he slaps upon the chest when he is full of rhetoric, nor the degraded dollar-chaser of European legend, then what is he?
"I was a visitor; and a girl is not expected to have sympathies. But to begin our home there: we should have to strike a note of some sort. How if my note should jar with yours? Paul, dear, it isn't nice to have convictions when one is young and going to be married. You know it isn't. It's not poetic, and it's not polite, and it's a dreadful bore!" The altruist and lover winced at this.
"It is quite like old times and very pleasant old times, too to see you sitting at our breakfast-table, Dr. Jervis." With these gracious words and a friendly smile, Mrs. Hanshaw handed me my tea-cup. I bowed. "The highest pleasure of the altruist," I replied, "is in contemplating the good fortune of others." Mrs. Haldean laughed. "Thank you," she said. "You are quite unchanged, I perceive.
"I admire you for it, old boy. I don't believe I should have done it at your age too much of a Forsyte, I'm afraid. But I suppose the type gets thinner with each generation. Your son, if you have one, may be a pure altruist; who knows?" "He won't be like me, then, Dad; I'm beastly selfish." "No, my dear, that you clearly are not." Jolly shook his head, and they dug again.
Hypochondriacs moaned with their tongues in their cheeks in the presence of the prying night-patrol. Fevers flourished; multitudes were prostrated by influenza; the pleura played the devil with innumerable lungs. Anybody who was not a malingerer was voted a fool, an altruist. It was true; and we used to wonder which his worship was an invalid, an altruist, or an owl!
Nobody believes or wants to believe in the altruist any longer. I believe that if to-day a rich man stripped himself of all his possessions and obeyed the doctrines of the Bible by giving them to the poor, the Daily something or other would worry around until they found some interested motive, and the Daily something or other else would succeed in proving the man a hypocrite."
Besides, cribbing is an art. Ruddock, for instance, when he used to go on to translate, was accustomed to take up his Vergil in one hand and his Bohn in the other. "What is that other book, Ruddock?" Claremont asked once. "Some notes, sir," was the perfectly truthful answer. Ruddock was, moreover, an altruist; he always worked for the good of his fellow-men.
