Before commencing our journey to the interior, we must break the thread of our narrative by a brief biographical sketch: for this town is the birth-place, and here began the public career of that man whose life has become the history of his country. With him the Mexican Republic began, and with him it has been terminated.

The life has been said to have been originally written in Spain by Franciscus Schottus of Toledo, in the Latin language. But this biographical work is assigned to the date of 1594, previously to which the Life is known to have existed in German.

My formal schooling was little; I found it slow and shallow. In early manhood, I undertook the responsibilities of a householder, and have one daughter, now married. My middle life was blessed with the guidance of Lahiri Mahasaya. Master smiled at my eager face. Like all biographical sketches, his words had given the outward facts without revealing the inner man.

To be concluded, therefore, whether you like it or not, in the following number. Paris, March, 1839. The elements of the long biographical dissertation I lately sent you, my dear friend, were taken chiefly from a recent letter from Monsieur Marie-Gaston.

William Smith, the Yorkshire antiquary, who has sent me many of his antiquarian and biographical writings and publications. I do not think I saw Mr. David Gilmour, of Paisley, whose "Paisley Folk" and other writings have given me great pleasure.

The nearest biographical notice of him in point of time is found in the "History of the Worthies of England," by Thomas Fuller, D.D., London, 1662. Old Fuller's schoolmaster was Master Arthur Smith, a kinsman of John, who told him that John was born in Lincolnshire, and it is probable that Fuller received from his teacher some impression about the adventurer.

"Newspaper men know a great deal. They have to. Besides, Alan Massey is a celebrity. He is written up in our files." "What does that mean?" "It means that if he should die to-morrow all we would have to do would be to put in the last flip. The biographical data is all on the card ready to shoot." "Dear me. That's rather gruesome, isn't it?" shivered Tony. "I'm glad I'm not a celebrity.

It has been suggested by the able writer of a biographical sketch of Dr. Priestley in a monthly periodical, that the same elementary law of our mental constitution, suitably followed out, would explain a variety of mental phenomena hitherto inexplicable, and in particular some of the fundamental diversities of human character and genius.

As you will see when you have read the biographical notice, my sister cannot thank you herself; she is gone out of your sphere and mine, and human blame and praise are nothing to her now. But to me, for her sake, they are something still; it revived me for many a day to find that, dead as she was, the work of her genius had at last met with worthy appreciation.
