Our visit to the Bakeles village excited great interest; but when I came to describe our adventure with the elephants, I saw Kate and Bella's colour go. "Oh, Andrew!" exclaimed Kate, "how dreadful it would have been had the elephants reached you! How providential it was that Stanley and Senhor Silva arrived in time to save your life!"

And when he answered, he told her recklessly that he had not been to see her because his best clothes were in pawn. But Ruth did not care to wait ten days or two weeks. Besides, her lover was sick. The next afternoon, accompanied by Arthur, she arrived in the Morse carriage, to the unqualified delight of the Silva tribe and of all the urchins on the street, and to the consternation of Maria.

A week passed by, and we found ourselves perfectly settled in our new home. Silva was gaining strength and his wounds were healing, and we were all in excellent health. The doctor also had almost recovered his spirits. We began now to take a more extended survey of our island.

He instructed the officers of the revenue to use all strictness in its valuation, and not make any allowances. And because Diego de Silva whom the queen had designed for her treasurer, and who on that account had undertaken to see the money paid in London did not make sufficient haste in the settlement of his accounts, he was by the king's command cast into prison.

Then he took me by the arm and led me away. "I'm afraid Simmonds has his work cut out for him," he said, when we were out of earshot. "I thought so from the first. A fellow as clever as Silva would be certain to keep his line of retreat open. He's far away by this time." He walked on thoughtfully, a little smile on his lips. "I'm not altogether sorry," he continued.

Not deeming it politic to elevate to power any member of those families of distinction whose feuds were only dormant on compulsion, I appointed Manuel Telles de Silva Lobo, the Secretary of Government, as interim President; he being entirely unconnected with family factions, well acquainted with the details of government, and of unimpeachable integrity.

Senor JOSÉ BONIFACIO D'ANDRADE Y SILVA, Ministro e Secretario d'Estado. A rigorous blockade was nevertheless established, in spite of our deficiencies or the efforts made to raise or evade it though the enemy were bold in reliance upon their numbers, and none the less so, perhaps, from considering our recent failure a defeat.

As she approached we saw that she had a crew of dark, swarthy men, evidently not English. They hailed us in a foreign language. Senhor Silva replied, and a short conversation ensued. "They are my countrymen," he said, for he spoke English well. "The schooner is, I understand, a Portuguese man-of-war, and you will be kindly treated on board." "We are indeed fortunate," said Stanley.

Although they did not perhaps suspect us of such intentions, yet altogether, in spite of the bribes we had to offer them, they thought it wiser to return to their own people. Senhor Silva promised them that as soon as we could find a spot on which to settle, if they did not wish to remain with us, they should be paid and allowed to depart.

An inquiry was made among his partisans, who swore that they knew nothing of it, and had not imagined it. The archbishop prevented the confirmation of three prebends which his Majesty had presented to Don Francisco Gutierrez Briceno, Bachelor Domingo de Valencia, and Doctor Pedro de Silva; the first-named for cantor, the second for schoolmaster, the third for treasurer.
