To the right and to the left the forests were like the walls of an ancient ampitheater which enclosed the fighting gladiators, while the springs, the fountains and the flowing brooks seemed to sob amid the panic of the country. Beneath the shed Francoise still sat near Dominique's body; she had not moved. Pere Merlier had received a slight wound.
Then they gathered together in excited groups and discussed the incident in heated undertones. Ambrose, quite unconcerned, took up a pack of cards and commenced a game of solitaire. He wasn't worrying. He knew that Dominique was no more a Voodoo than he was. Startled at first, he had noticed that the eye had not been carved in Dominique's back, as it should have been, but had been tattooed.
A heavy broken breath came from the father, and he replied haltingly: "Mebbe mebbe so." Dominique's eyes closed again. "I'll make up some," he said slowly: "And if mother's lost, O Bon Jésu, bring her back again to us, for everything's going wrong." Again he paused, then went on with the prayer as it had been taught him.
This was a little beyond Dominique's English, but Pedro explained it to him, and at Frank's request went below with them; Frank telling Hawkins to weigh anchor as soon as the tanks were filled and the stores were on board. He had, before he came off, returned to Senor Cordovo and paid for all the things supplied.
Then she realized that the waterfall with its continuous roar would drown every noise she might make, and she descended more courageously, feeling the ivy with her foot, assuring herself that the rounds were firm. When she was at the height of the chamber which served as Dominique's prison she paused.
"Bah!" he cries, "it's all play; let 'em pretend to put down insurrection as often as they please. It is good for trade and promotion, and the Arabs know how to defend themselves." But events falsified this sarcasm of Monsieur Dominique's, for the insurrection proved serious, and it was months before we heard of our Lieutenant.
Francoise, her hands clasped, supplicated him from afar. She had forgotten everything; she would have advised him to commit an act of cowardice. But Pere Merlier seized her hands that the Prussians might not see her wild gestures. "He is right," he whispered: "it is better to die!" The platoon of execution was there. The officer awaited a sign of weakness on Dominique's part.
We go up one, if find dat hit not de one dey go, den come back again and try anoder. What we to do?" After thinking for some little time, Frank suggested that Dominique's best way would be to tell the guide that he was footsore, and that as several paths would have to be searched, he and one of the men would sit down there.
The officer went to the apartment in which the prisoner had been confined, looked out of the window which had remained open, understood everything and returned, exasperated. Pere Merlier seemed greatly vexed by Dominique's flight. "The imbecile!" he muttered. "He has ruined all!" Francoise heard him and was overcome with anguish. But the miller did not suspect her of complicity in the affair.
By the help of Françoise, Dominique kills the sentinel who has been set to watch him, and escapes into the forest; but the German captain, suspecting that the miller and his daughter have had a hand in his escape, orders the old man to be shot in Dominique's place.
