It was her bird notes that had answered Mustagan. Little did they realise, a year or so before, as he taught Wenonah these calls of the birds and what they meant, that her very life would so soon depend upon her knowledge of them.

Wenonah, at the door of her brother's wigwam, looked into the north and saw the stars grow pale through streams of electric fire. "The Woman of the North warns us of coming evil," muttered the chief. "Some danger is near. Fire on the lights!" And a volley of musketry sent a shock through the still air. "They shine for me," said Wenonah, sadly.

For some moments she studied Wenonah in silence. "She was afraid of him. She would not go out to the forest nor on the river while he was here. But he went away " "He could have planned it all. He would find enough to do his bidding. But if she has been taken up North, Paspah will find her." That gave some present comfort to Pani.

It was wisely decided that, as the children were so exhausted, at least a couple of days should be allowed to pass before they were asked to give anything like a full account of their marvellous adventures. Wenonah, of course, was the principal speaker, but Roderick often put in some quaint remark, which gave additional interest to the story.

To the last, Sam's joy was to have with him the little children, Wenonah and Roderick. To him was assigned a large, safe canoe, and a couple of trusty Indians to aid in the paddling. The rest of the party went out more or less frequently, as it best suited them. So much had to be done to complete the arrangements for the journey that often the young folks went out alone on their joyous trips.

Every ferry passenger is familiar with the rapid tinkling of the ratchet wheel that warps the landing stage up to the level of the boat's deck. I asked the man who was running the wheel where I would find the Wenonah. "She lays over in the old Market Street slip," he replied, and cheerfully showed me just where to find her. "Is she still used?" I asked.

I am sure God will hear." They ate their lunch with a relish; Jeanne had found some berries and some ripe wild plums. There was a hollow tree full of honey, she could tell by the odorous, pungent smell. She would tell Wenonah and have some of the boys go at night and oh, how hard to rob the poor bees, to murder and rob them! No, she would keep their secret.

For Paspah spent most of his time stretched in the sunshine smoking his pipe, and often sold his game for a drink of rum. Several times he had been induced to go up north with the fur hunters, and Wenonah was happy and cheerful without him. "I do not want a brave," Jeanne would fling out laughingly. "I shall be brave enough for myself." "And thou art sensible, Red Rose!" nodding sagely.

In the midst of all, in the clear drab of the afternoon light, there steamed up the river the large new boat, the Wenonah, as pretty an object as you could wish to see, lightly and swiftly skimming along, all trim and white, covered with flags, transparent red and blue streaming out in the breeze.

Some time was spent in this work amid the excitement of all, as the contest was very close. "Where is Roderick?" said Mrs Ross. "O, he is with Wenonah," said Minnehaha. "And where is Wenonah?" was the question now. No one seemed to know. And so the cry of the sweet musical name rang out on the air: "Wenonah! Wenonah!"
