Last week that was, before she had decided to come to Sleepy Hollow, and broken up all their happy plans. Only last week! Then she thought of Tryphosa, lying with closed eyes in her darkened room, waiting patiently for the sleep which so often refused to come, while the angel of pain brooded over her pillow. Then her eyes sought the stars. 'You dear things! she whispered.
It had been a hard day, her step-mother had been more than usually restless, and the farm-work had been very heavy, for Martha Spriggs was home on a visit; every nerve in her body seemed to quiver with the strain. 'My dearest Paul, Belle wrote, 'I can hardly see for crying, but I promised her that you should know at once. 'Tryphosa went away from us to "the other shore" last night.
They who, looking on their dear ones, can 'trust they live in God, will there find them 'worthier to be loved, and will there find a power of loving them. Tryphena and Tryphosa were more sisterly than ever when they clung to their Elder Brother.
Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord. Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord. Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine. Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren which are with them.
Then there are, in the same verse as my text, two sisters, Tryphena and Tryphosa, whose names mean 'the luxurious. And the Apostle seems to think, as he writes the two names that spoke of self-indulgence: 'Perhaps these rightly described these two women once, but they do not now. In the bad old days, before they were Christians, they may have been rightly named luxurious-living.
Tryphena and Tryphosa were probably Roman ladies of some social standing, and their names may indicate that they at least inherited a tendency to exclusiveness; yet here they occur immediately after the household of Narcissus and in close connection with that of Aristobulus, both of which are groups of slaves.
Bushel's death had been accelerated by vexation through seeing a survey carried across his own fields. As for Mrs. Broad and Tryphosa, they left Cowfold and went into Lancashire, to be near uncle Flavel.
The letter dropped from her hand, and she sat for hours motionless, her eyes taking in every detail of the pretty moonlit room, until it was indelibly engraved upon her memory. When the morning came she took the letter to Tryphosa. She could not trust herself to tell the others yet. The eyes that looked up at her from the open sheet were very tender. 'Dear child, are you satisfied?
She looked through the French windows into the conservatory. 'How beautiful the flowers are! 'You love them? Of course you must, to be your mother's child. It is such a comfort to me to lie here and listen to them talk. 'Talk! exclaimed Pauline. 'Do they do that, my lady? Tryphosa smiled. 'Surely, she said gently. "Every flower has its story, and every butterfly's life is a poem."
They had scarcely crossed the threshold when Doctor Glasson staggered by them like a maniac, with Tryphosa hanging on to his clerical skirts and Tryphena in full cry behind. Butts brought up the rear of the chase, vainly shouting to call them off. "Down, Tryphosa!" Miss Sally ran in, planted a well-directed kick on the mastiff's ribs, caught her by the scruff of the neck and banged her ears.
