On the Origin and Development of the Italian Pastoral Drama The chapter in the history of Italian literature which shall deal with the evolution of the Arcadian drama still remains to be written. The treatment of it in Symonds' Renaissance is decidedly inadequate, and even as far as it goes not altogether satisfactory.

Symonds was impressed with this quality of vastness in Whitman, and, despairing of conveying an adequate notion of him by any process of literary analysis, resorts to the use of a succession of metaphors, the symbolic use of objects that convey the idea of size and power.

On one occasion, Sir Symonds D'Ewes relates that he was thrown headlong into a pond; and on another, we learn from a different source that he was cast over his horse's head into the New River, and narrowly escaped drowning, his boots alone being visible above the ice covering the stream.

He left it all to his subordinates, and to his partner Symonds, who was some eight or ten years his junior. He glanced at the clock, and beat a tattoo with his foot on the floor, conscious of his inward impatience with the reiterated "Whereas the said" and "Witnesseth the so-and-so," which echoed dully on the otherwise unbroken silence.

I have many memories of seeing our peasant friends off from Symonds' front door, and standing by his side in the dark, listening to the crack of their whips and their yodels yelled far down the snow roads into the starry skies. When I first left him and returned to England, Mrs.

"I gave them to Captain Lloyd, and I don't know what he did with them." The judge advocate, who had entered all questions and answers in the book before him, paused and gazed blankly at Symonds for a moment; then resumed his examination. "When did you last see Captain Lloyd?" "On the afternoon of Monday, the sixth of last March. He had just returned from Winchester."

"To buy guano! Why could he not get his guano from Walker, as my man Symonds does?" "He says it is not good. He analyzed it, and " "Fiddlestick! Why didn't he order it in London, if he didn't like Walker's. Gone to Liverpool for guano! I'll tell you what it is, Lady Mason; if he intends to farm his land in that way, he should have a very considerable capital at his back.

This whole subject has been exhaustively treated by John Addington Symonds in the fourth volume in his great work "The Renaissance in Italy." He examines briefly, but suggestively, D'Ancona's theory, that the "Sacre Rappresentazioni" resulted from a blending of the Umbrian divozioni with the civic pageants of St. John's Day in Florence.

Yes straight up second floor third door Vesey and Symonds!" With these words jerked out of himself at lightning speed, the boy rushed past her and disappeared. With a beating heart Mary cautiously climbed the dark staircase which he had just descended. When she reached the second floor, she paused.

And don't let them whip you into line by their threats, either. I refuse, for one, as much as I love my party, to have its tag tied into my ear if that tag isn't clean!" The assemblage applauded that sentiment. "I'm going to call names, gentlemen. Colonel Symonds Dodd has this state by its throat.
