My colleague and master, Josiah Royce, in a page of his review of Stout's Analytic Psychology, in Mind for 1897, has some fine words on this point with which I cordially agree.

The common belief was that Backus owed his exemption from the grasp of the Committee and from the dread penalty which Casey and Cora suffered, not to any doubt as to his guilt, but solely on account of his relationship and his social standing. He had been boon companion of many of the young men of the Committee before he committed the murder in Stout's alley.

"Look, look!" cried several of the others. "The captain has lent that little boy his 'Seven Leaguers." "I know where he is going," said one; "to jump over the North Pole." "No," laughed another. "He is going to catch the cow that 'jumped over the moon, for Johnny Stout's mother."

Followed three feverish days and nights; then as they sat in pajamas in Stout's apartment, Wade said: "I don't imagine there is anything more to see or do in this hectic city of yours, and I am free to say I don't like it; I think I'll move on." "Not yet," said Stout, with the grin that endeared him to everybody that ever met him. "You've only seen the outside edges so far.

He even began to dream of being able to go out some time and join the bigger boys in coasting down the long hill on the other side from Johnny Stout's, for though his father and mother thought he was still rather small to do this, his father had promised that he might do it sometime, and Tommy thought "sometime" would be after his next birthday.

All these points will be amplified when we come to the analysis of knowledge, but it is necessary briefly to state them now in order to suggest the atmosphere in which our analysis of "introspection" is to be carried on. Another point in which Stout's remarks seem to me to suggest what I regard as mistakes is his use of "consciousness."

It was believed that Stout's couriers would make the homeward run, very nearly, by the route the pack-train took throughout the day, and if they succeeded in evading hostile scouts or parties, would soon appear about some of the breaks of the upper Beaver. Thither, therefore, with all possible speed Plume had directed his men, promising Mrs.

And I shall be in another if I don't set to work this very minute," ended Betty, reaching for her Stout's Psychology. Lucile Merrifield, Betty's stately sophomore cousin, and Polly Eastman, Lucile's roommate and dearest friend, sat on Madeline Ayres's bed and munched Madeline's sweet chocolate complacently. "Wish I had cousins in Paris that would send me 'eats' as good as this," sighed Polly.

It was then a little after ten o'clock. The wire to Prescott was still unresponsive. Nothing had been heard from the linesmen and their escort, indicating that the break was probably far over as the Agua Fria. Not a sign, except Stout's signal blazes at the picacho, had been gathered from the front.

He took Vandersee's arm now, turning him until he faced the mainsail. "See that slit, Mr. Vandersee?" he said casually, yet watching the man's face closely. "Might have a man patch that in the morning. Don't think it's necessary to unbend the sail, is it?" "No sir. Lower away to the first reef. That'll do. How did it happen, sir? That's a stout piece of canvas." "Stout's right, Mr.
