Silence! ground arms! kneel all! caps off! Old Blue-light's going to pray. Strangle the fool that dares to scoff! Attention! 'tis his way! Appealing from his native sod In forma pauperis to God; "Lay bare Thine arm stretch forth Thy rod! Amen!" That's Stonewall's way.

The tremendous work Stonewall's men had performed, including the rapid march from the Valley of Virginia, the short rations, the bad water, and the great heat, had begun to tell upon us, and I was pretty well worn out. On this particular morning my battery had not moved from its bivouac ground of the previous night, but was parked in an open field, all ready waiting orders.

The foremost, a florid, side-whiskered, magnificently soldierly personage, wearing a very fine grey uniform and the stars of a major-general, addressed him. "What are you doing here, thir? Thraggling? Anther me!" Steve saluted. "I ain't the straggling kind, sir. Any man that says I straggle is a liar exceptin' the colonel, and he's mistaken. I'm one of Stonewall's men." "Thtonewall!

If Stonewall's proceedings had become Matter of common knowledge the world would have been I must speak plainly revolutionized. He held in his hands the means of realizing the wildest dreams of power, wealth, and human mastery over the forces of nature, that any enthusiast ever treasured in his prophetic soul.

Scouts had brought him word that Jackson was moving, and he had taken note of the encounter with the rearguard of Stonewall's force. But as that force continued its march into the deep forest and disappeared from sight, the brave and sanguine Hooker was confirmed in his opinion that the whole Southern army was retreating.

So many dead men, grey and blue, lying as in pattern! And then the plain beneath, and the Stonewall's desperate fight, and the battle in the wheat! The Federal cannon had sheared the heads from the men. The soldiers, mounting through the darkness in the whistling wind and rain, saw again these headless bodies.

But we understood nothing, except that Edmund was indulging in one of his eccentric dreams, and Jack, in his large, careless, good-natured way broke in with: "Well, Edmund, suppose you could 'get at it, as you say; what would you do with it?" Stonewall's eyes gleamed for a moment, and then he replied, with a curious emphasis: "I might do what Archimedes dreamed of."

Here is Church's narrative, omitting the introduction, which read like a law paper: "When we went over from the club to Stonewall's house, I dropped behind the others, because the four of them took up the whole width of the sidewalk. Stonewall was talking to them, and my attention was attracted by something uncommon in his manner.

"Barbara Frietchie's work is o'er, And the Rebel rides on his raids no more. "Honor to her! and let a tear Fall, for her sake, on Stonewall's bier. "Over Barbara Frietchie's grave, Flag of Freedom and Union, wave! "Peace and order and beauty draw Round thy symbol of light and law; "And ever the stars above look down On thy stars below in Frederick town!"

A portion of the same regiment under Colonel John R. Kenly, at Front Royal, added new lustre to their fame, on the twenty-third of the same month, during "Stonewall's" flank movement on General Banks at Strasburg, and fought bravely during that memorable retreat to Maryland.
