The fact that Denry Machin decided not to drive behind his mule to Sneyd Hall showed in itself that the enterprise of interviewing the Countess of Chell was not quite the simple daily trifling matter that he strove to pretend it was. The mule was a part of his more recent splendour. It was aged seven, and it had cost Denry ten pounds.
I went down to Ramsgate for a week with a friend last September, just after my return from the West Indies. My friend Sneyd you have heard me speak of Sneyd, Edmund his father, and mother, and sisters, were there, all new to me. When we reached Albion Place they were out; we went after them, and found them on the pier: Mrs. and the two Miss Sneyds, with others of their acquaintance.
But immediately after dinner, when the posters of the early edition of the Signal waved in the streets, he had material for other thought. He saw a poster as he was walking across to his office. The awful legend ran: ASTOUNDING ATTEMPTED BURGLARY AT SNEYD HALL. In buying the paper he was afflicted with a kind of ague. And the description of events at Sneyd Hall was enough to give ague to a negro.
You may say what you like about Titus Blackhurst I know there's a good many that don't like him but he's a real good sort. I'm sure he's the best Sunday School superintendent we ever had. Then there's Mr Clayton-Vernon, and Alderman Sutton, and young Henry Mynors and " "And Eardley Brothers they're giving a hundred apiece," put in Lovatt, glancing at Randolph Sneyd.
MARIA to C. SNEYD EDGEWORTH, ESQ. EDGEWORTHSTOWN, Feb. 12, 1835. I feel your kindness now most particularly in giving me your full opinion, and desiring mine without one word of reproach on not having heard from me.
I don't know exactly how much money I had, but it was between thirty-five and thirty-eight thousand francs, and Sneyd won it all after we took off the limit over seven thousand dollars at her table last night. Putting two and two together, honestly it looks bad. It looks mighty bad!
Elizabeth Edgeworth added nine more brothers and sisters to the group of six which already existed; the eldest of them, Henry, born in 1782, was entrusted to Maria's especial care. MARIA to MISS CHARLOTTE SNEYD. EDGEWORTHSTOWN, Dec. 9, 1787.

"I'm meetin' lots of people I know to-day. You runnin' over to Paris, too? Come up to the boat-deck and meet the Countess de Vaurigard." "Who?" said Mellin, red with pleasure, yet fearing that he did not hear aright. "The Countess de Vaurigard. Queen! met her in London. Sneyd introduced me to her. You remember Sneyd on the steamer?
