The other day, at the museum, I was delving among the relics of literature of the great Revolution, with a view to finding something that might illustrate our theme. I came across a little pamphlet of the period, yellow and almost undecipherable, which, on examination, I found to be a rather amusing skit or satirical take-off on the profit system.
This article appearing in a Syndicalist organ seemed an event. Some journals summarized and commented it approvingly, until it was discovered to be a skit on the transient conditions in France, whereupon the "admirable exposé based upon convincing evidence" and the "forcible arguments" became worthless.
Vincent on these occasions, and in full uniform, gave rise to an amusing skit by one of the lieutenants of the fleet, attributing the homage exacted, not to the flag, but to the great man himself; and this, becoming known to the admiral, elicited from him in turn the exhibition of practical humor to which allusion has just been made.
"I think it's an anonymous skit by way of a hoax." "Most likely it is. There's no taking you in." "What makes me think that is that it's so stupid." "Have you received such documents here before?" "Once or twice, anonymous letters." "Oh, of course they wouldn't be signed. In a different style? In different handwritings?" "Yes." "And were they buffoonery like this one?"
Shackford turned, and with the absorbed air of a naturalist studying some abnormal bug gazed over the steel bow of his spectacles at Durgin. "Skit!" Durgin hastily retreated. "There's a poor lawyer saved," muttered the old man, taking down his overcoat from a peg behind the door, and snapping off a shred of lint on the collar with his lean forefinger.
When the 'skit' blew past he took his gun from the corner and stepped over the hatch, and came down the path with me, grumbling that all the grain, even where the crop looked well, had threshed out so light. Farming had gone utterly to the dogs of late seasons; he thought he should give up the land he rented, and live on the ninety acres freehold.
We know too much of Moray to acquiesce, without reserve, in this eulogium. By no people but the Scots, perhaps, could this jape have been taken seriously, but, with a gravity that would have delighted Charles Lamb, Knox denounced the skit from the pulpit as a fabrication by the Father of Lies.
Get in touch with that country, and your local color will convince. Personally though, I like those little society skits you do " "Skits!" exploded Thurston. "My last was a four-part serial. I never did a skit in my life." "Beg pardon-which is more than you did after accusing my studies of having untidy hair. Don't look so glum, Phil.
He had gone down himself occasionally for a frolic with them and "Jump!" had been the signal for the push-off of any timid diver. He shouted with glee when he read the skit he was taking his high dive in life. They lined up in front of the headquarters and gave a shrill cheer that made up in enthusiasm for what it lacked in volume.
We had still some biltong left, but our stomachs turned from biltong, and besides, we were obliged to be very sparing of it, for we could not say when we should find more food. Just at this moment a lucky thing chanced. Looking across the desert I saw a flock of about ten large birds flying straight towards us. "Skit, Baas, skit!"
