They have made these industries famous. They believe that their prosperity is in large measure due to their acceptance of the Union, that it would be lessened if they threw in their lot with the other Ireland and accepted its ideals, that business which now goes to their shipyards and factories would cease if they were absorbed in a self-governing Ireland whose spokesmen had an unfortunate habit of nagging their neighbors and of conveying the impression that they are inspired by race hatred.

At the moment something HAD touched a Borodino and in the most vital of spots. This was nothing less than the heart of young Vittorio, the pride and hope of his father. He had seen the "Rose of the Shipyards," as she was now called, pass the traghetto of the Molo, off which lay his gondola awaiting custom, it was on one of the days when the two-soldi boy acted as chaperon, and his end had come.

Meantime, British shipyards are busy night and day; a million tons of craft for the Navy alone were launched during the first year of the war, and the programme of new naval construction for 1917 runs into hundreds of thousands of tons.

When I came on deck in the early morning, the sun was rising behind the mountains which form the background of Honolulu as seen from the harbour, tipping them with gold and red, and bathing the landscape in beauty. I could now survey at leisure the lovely scene. I found we had entered a noble harbour, round which the town of Honolulu is built, with its quays, warehouses and shipyards.

"I feel better now I've told you." Joe and Micky Donlon, which the red-haired boy said was his name, though probably Michael was what he had been christened, were soon on their way toward the river and the location of one of the shipyards. "Are youse sure I can see de show to-night?" asked Micky eagerly, as they walked along. "Positive," said Joe. "Here's a reserved seat ticket now.

National pride has naturally demanded that all vessels for the navy be built in American shipyards, and a federal law has long restricted the trade between ports of the United States to ships built here. The lake shipping, too prodigious in numbers and activity is purely American. But until within a few years the American flag had almost disappeared from vessels engaged in international trade.

With the increased tonnage being put out by the British, French, and Italian shipyards, and the output of neutral countries friendly to the Allies, this practically put an end to the submarine peril.

And meanwhile I have not seen anything, and shall not have time to see anything of the famous shipyards of the firm. But with regard to them, all that it is necessary to remember is that before the war they were capable of berthing twenty ships at once, from the largest battleship downward; and we have Mr.

"Cowan Steamboat Mortgage," read Alexina from a page of early entries. "What was that?" "A mortgage held for you on a boat built at the Cowan shipyards." "What was the name of the boat?" Alexina's voice sounded suddenly strained and odd. "The 'King William," said Austen. "The boat never paid for itself, and the mortgage was foreclosed and the boat sold."

There were decaying shipyards about the harbour, and wooden breakwaters stretched long, thin arms seawards for ships that did not come. On the other side of the railway apple blossoms showed above a white-washed wall; some market gardening was done in the low-lying fields, whence the downs rose in gradual ascents. On the first slope there was a fringe of trees. That was Woodview.
