The bay trace-horses, little, keen, black-eyed, black-legged beasts, were all impatience; they kept rearing a whistle, and off they would have bolted! The dark-bay shaft-horse stood firmly, its neck arched like a swan's, its breast forward, its legs like arrows, shaking its head and proudly blinking.... They were splendid! No one could desire a finer turn out for an Easter procession!
"I've found the road!" the coachman cried, making his appearance at the right front wheel, "I turned to the left by mistake but it doesn't matter, we'll soon be home. It's not much farther. Sit still, please!" He got onto the box, took the reins from Markelov, pulled the shaft-horse a little to one side, and the carriage, after one or two jerks, rolled along more smoothly and evenly.
And everything was still again; there was only the faint gurgle of the water as before. I sank into a state of torpor. Moonlight, and night, and the river, and we in it.... 'What is that croaking noise? I asked Filofey. 'That? Ducks in the reeds... or else snakes. All of a sudden the head of the shaft-horse shook, his ears pricked up; he gave a snort, began to move.
"Oh, yes, indeed!" replied Pierre, roughly; "one must have money in one's pocket for that, and this fellow has only debts instead of savings." "But you," said I, rather astonished; "are you not his friend?" "Friend!" interrupted the bookbinder. "Yes, as much as the shaft-horse is friend to the leader on condition that each will take his share of the draught, and eat his feed by himself."
Two of the sleighs were drawn by light cart-horses, to the third the count's carriage horses were harnessed, and one of these was reputed a famous trotter from Orlow's stable; the fourth sleigh, with its rough-coated, black shaft-horse, was Nicolas's private property.
In my last work you made me speak purer English than you found in my Journal, and altered my phraseology, or rather my dialect. Now, my dear Nippent " "Nippent!" said I, "what is that?" "The most endearing word in the Indian language for friend," he said, "only it's more comprehensive, including ally, foster-brother, life-preserver, shaft-horse, and everything that has a human tie in it."
There were sixteen to the team, carried on a frame above each animal's shoulders, and tuned to scale, so as to form two octaves, running from the highest note on the right or off-side of the leader to the lowest on the left or near-side of the shaft-horse.
Court carriages with lackeys in crimson and gold, ambassadors' sledges with cock-plumed chasseurs and cockaded coachmen, the latter wearing their chevrons on their backs; rude wooden sledges, whose sides are made of knotted ropes, filled with superfluous snow; grand ducal troikas with clinking harnesses studded with metal plaques and flying tassels, the outer horses coquetting, as usual, beside the staid trot of the shaft-horse, all mingle in the endless procession which flows on up the Nevsky Prospekt through the Bolshaya Morskaya, Great Sea Street, and out upon the Neva quays, and back again, to see and be seen, until long after the sun has set on the short days, at six minutes to three.
'Do you hear, Mityuha, put in another driver, standing by with his hands thrust behind him into the opening of his sheepskin coat, 'what the gentleman called you? It's a bushy beard you are too. Mityuha only gave a jog to his hat and pulled the reins off the heated shaft-horse.
