In the image of GOD was man made, and therefore GOD suffices for all the needs of man's nature: that, at least seems to be the underlying idea when Rolle writes: "GOD is light and burning. Light clarifies our reason, burning kindles our will." May we not say here too? "What GOD has joined together, that let not man put asunder."
But if, for instance the Oxford undergraduate of to-day realizes Rolle, not as a picturesque fourteenth-century hermit, but as a fellow-student another Oxford undergraduate, separated from him only by an interval of time who gave up that university and the career it could offer him, under the compulsion of another Wisdom and another Love, then he re-enters the living past.
Oh, the righteousness of the greatest saint was, and is, but as dust and ashes before the righteousness of Jesus! and I came to wonder if there ever was or could be a saint, save one Jesus. But this Richard Rolle, this person so discourteous to some fellow-beings, could all the same be very tender and loving towards God: he, too, held in his heart the Pearl without Price.
