Nothing of importance happened between Chattanooga and Nashville. At Nashville Maroney put up at the City Hotel, while Roch obtained lodgings at a German saloon just around the corner. Maroney met plenty of friends, who received him warmly. He amused himself by going to the livery stables, looking at the horses, and driving around the city.

Men had passed each day for a week between our quarters and Colonel Arnold's at St. Roch, concerting arrangements. There were Frenchmen inside the town from whom we were promised aid. What we did not know was that there were other Frenchmen, in our camp, who advised Carleton of all our plans.

"No, but I have often seen you passing under my window. I live at St. Roch, near the bridge." The way in which the woman told her yarn convinced us that she was an adept in the science of prostitution, but we thought Capsucefalo, in spite of the count, worthy of the pillory.

Beneath, between the arches supporting the fresco, are SS. Sebastian and Roch, the former as fine as anything in the picture. As Luini's great work is the most northern fresco of any importance, and is generally the first seen by the visitor to Italy, it serves as a kind of introduction to the art which distinguishes that glorious land.

"No, Thomas Roch, the pirates are those who have imprisoned you in this cavern of Back Cup, who will utilize your genius to defend it, and who will get rid of you when they are in entire possession of your secrets!" Thomas Roch here interrupts me. He does not appear to listen to what I say.

As to the deflagrator liquid, Thomas Roch has a certain number of phials of it, and I know only too well will not refuse to help Ker Karraje's pirates with it. During these preparations night has come on. Only the lamps of the Beehive are lighted and a semi-obscurity reigns in the cavern. I return to my cell.

As the result of this second rebuff Roch's anger became coupled with hatred an instinctive hatred of humanity especially after his pourparlers with the British Admiralty came to naught. The English being practical people, did not at first repulse Thomas Roch. They sounded him and tried to get round him; but Roch would listen to nothing.

Carronades were on the principle of a gigantic shotgun, firing masses of bullets with great effect at very short ranges less than that of a long musket-shot, then reckoned at two hundred yards. The biggest mortars threw 13-inch 224-lb shells to a great distance. But their main use was for high-angle fire, such as that from the suburb of St Roch under the walls of Quebec.

Roch concluded he was going to the place where he had lost him the day before, and now he had the coveted opportunity of finding his hiding place.

Mr. and Mrs. Alderson and myself left this gay scene, and the constant toll of Romish bells, for St. Roch.
